Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle courtesy of Degarth. Thanks again. Poured a murky-brackish brown with no head. The aroma is kind of light with shriveled up dates, plums and raisins. Behind that I also smell a nice sweet caramel. The flavor is complex and not altogether smooth. The flavor starts with a bolt of alcohol then alcohol soaked dates, plums and raisins. That takes the taste to beyond midway where a sweet caramel flavor takes over for the main note. Also joining the fun is a roasted maltiness and some cinnamon. Excellent winter sipping brew.

Deep amber/red with a faint white head. Syrupy palate, viscous body. Caramel up front, a bit worty, lots of excess alcohol showing. Fruity finish with a lingering hint of bourbon and toffee.

Bottles from a couple of kind folks. This one has a nice nose of wood, vanilla, green apple, brown sugar, earthy hops and more sweet malty goodness. Pours a murky orange amber with a thin head. Lots of malts in the flavor, toffee, green apple, softer light fruity notes, brown sugar, and woody earthy bitterness that rounds out the finish. The alcohol becomes a little warming towards the end of the brew. Soft carb, smooth drinking, pleasant finish.

Wonderful nose -- bold and vibrant, with hints of rum and fresh-cut coconut. Cloudy, deep amber. Super smooth with a milkshake-like texture; mild carb. Malts exuded with sugar water-soaked wood and vanilla, with lesser hints of caramel and powdered cocoa. Moderate bitterness. Curious background aromas of perfume, seaweed and mysterious spices. Alcohol was hidden well on the front end, but it was affectionately warming on the back end. Curiously enough, it tastes more like this beer was aged in rum barrels rather than bourbon barrels. Nevertheless, it’s a nice sweet-sour addition.

12oz. Bottle: Sweet malty aroma smells of malts, wood, caramel, milk chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon. Poured copper in color with a huge, dense beige head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Full of large particles. Good lacing. Lightly sweet flavor. Tastes of bourbon, oak, vanilla, malts, resinous hops, and raisins. Full body. Thick, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Smooth, bitter, malty finish.

Copper, no head - nice aroma, with a bit of rum or whiskey, and touches of vanill and chocolate. Flavor is smooth and rich, with a bourbon and brown sugar, maybe some molasses, too. Very tasty stuff.

Rich burnt amber color, hazy. Fruity aroma--coconut and rotting pomegranate. Smooth palate. Solid beer, all-around enjoyable on a cold winter night.
