COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Hazy amber color; small head. The aroma is less interesting than the first time, the flavor is as rich as I remembered: sweet caramel and toffee, strong vanilla; without being thick, the sugars are sticky on the lips; and strong final bitterness, a bit woody.

2009-08-31, bottle at Monk’s Café, Wallingatan, 9-5-9-4-18=45
Red amber color; small creamy head. Extremely rich aroma, malt caramel and vanilla oak. Strong body, rich caramel and malt flavor, perfectioned by the vanilla and the hops. Truly enjoyable.

Bottle. It pours a nice-looking pale copper color and a small, off-white head. Malty sweetness, caramel, some cloves and alcohol, and there’s also a vanilla and woody touch of bourbon. Full-bodied, warming and pleasantly carbonated. The flavor has a distinct bourbon touch, with bread, caramel, quite a lot of sweetness, some raisins, a fine resiny bitterness, alcohol warmth, even more sweetness and a bitterness taking you towards the end. Sweet, slightly bitter finish. Overall, too sweet, but really lovely anyway. A bit heavy on the alcohol too, but definitely lovely. 101009

harrisoni (14850) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - NOV 3, 2009
Bottle from De Molen beer shop. Clear russet, lasting dark beige. Some strong intense malt with some bourbon on the aroma. Better in mouth, the malts are strong and syrupy and some very good ESB style malts. Bourbon is present but not over the top or unbalanced. Some vanilla comes through. Alcohol is really well hidden with just some fullness. Hops on end are good, slightly bitter and hide any burn. Stupidly drinkable. Pretty decent beer, if not exactly the kind of thing that I would normally like.

Bottle, 9.3%. Very nice vanilla, oak, cigarbox aroma. Cloudy red orange colour. The flavour has a lot of vanilla, some coconut, hint of cream, all the nice stuff. Low bitterness, but balanced by the alcohol.

Leighton (13535) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 5, 2015
Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Fergus. Pours mostly clear orange with mild particulate presence and a frothy off-white head. Lots of ripe and tangy fruits in the nose, some berries, caramel, spices. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with gooey malts, some cinnamon, rich berries, subtle spice, some leafy hops. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes warming and lightly sticky, with some further spice character, toffee, bread, slight dates. Good stuff.
