COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

(12oz bottle) Cloudy copper-brown body with small beige head. Aroma is sweet, raisin, caramel, cherry, some coconut, light chocolate, smoke, butterscotch, wood. Taste is sweet, cherry, caramel, raisin, light pineapple/coconut. Finish has light smoky bourbon, enough to notice the alcohol numbing and to complement the beer itself, and thankfully, not enough to do anything more. Sticky full body with low carbonation. A hot summer evening probably wasn’t the ideal time to sample this wonderful beer, but I’m glad I did anyhow.

Pours deep brownish red with a slight haze to it. Fine, staying, creamy, off-white head. Super lacings. Aroma has fat caramel, port, raisins, light vinious, chocolate and a bit of fruity hops. Low to medium carbonation, lovely oily mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, port, oak, roasted, light chocolate, caramel. Fairly vinious. Lovely hoppy finish with some raisins and a touch of dark chocolate. Good beer.

Taste is medium malt-toffee/brown sugar, dark fruit-cherry/raisin, boozy/wood, herbal/spice hops. Nicer as it warmed to cellar temp then room temp. occasional. Sipping. Copper with a small white head. Aroma of sweet caramel with dried fruits, tangerine, vanilla and cinnamon. Sweet fruity and spicy flavour, with a hint of alcohol and a little bitterness. It has old ale qualities, but you’re never in doubt about theAmerican origin.

Bottle. Pours hazy ruby/orange color with no head. Rather malty aroma with something like mild hop. Full bodied with very little carbonation. Flavor is maybe a bit vanilla. It coats the mouth a bit. Medium dark dried fruits. Really smooth. Finishes really tasty.

A: The pour is a dark, dark mahogany color with a lot of yeast floaties, and a thin ring of cream colored head. S: The nose is quite rich with notes of sherry, dark fruit (raisins in particular), caramel, vanilla, and alcohol. T: The sweet caramel malt is the primary flavor component with some sweet, dark fruits, vanilla, and quite a bit of alcohol. There’s also a mild bitterness. M: The body is medium with a creamy carbonation and mouthfeel. D: A very nice old ale and a good beer to sip on throughout an evening.
