COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle thanks to Alex. Pours reddish amber with almost no head. Nose is cherry, oak and medicine. Taste follows suit but is quite pleasant.

Bottle. Poured dark hazy brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Heavy sweet malty and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky texture. Heavy sweet flavor with a heavy bitter small alcohol finish of long duration. This is a standout beer and may indicate a change in style of brewer or a different brewmaster.

Sweet malty aroma. Disgustingly boozy sweet body. Nice malty finish. Desperately dull, nothing can escape from the blanket of sugar and alcohol that smothers it.

12 oz. bottle, pours an opaque dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of syrupy sweet malts, caramel, some English malt notes, and some peppery spice. Flavour brings out some peppery spice, more than offset by English caramel malts and syrupy sweetness - sort of a rummy boozy sweetness to it. No hop presence whatsoever, just some peppery notes that are quite bothersome. Not so enjoyable to me - way overrated.

(12oz bottle) Cloudy copper-brown body with small beige head. Aroma is sweet, raisin, caramel, cherry, some coconut, light chocolate, smoke, butterscotch, wood. Taste is sweet, cherry, caramel, raisin, light pineapple/coconut. Finish has light smoky bourbon, enough to notice the alcohol numbing and to complement the beer itself, and thankfully, not enough to do anything more. Sticky full body with low carbonation. A hot summer evening probably wasnít the ideal time to sample this wonderful beer, but Iím glad I did anyhow.

Bottle. Creamy white good fair mostly lasting head. Orange-amber colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter vinius flavor. Average slightly perfumed finish. A little alcoholic. Creamy palate. Not a very good barleywine.

Bottle 2010 vintage poured a clear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of toffee, fruitiness, sherry, spice and light caramel. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, sherry and dried fruit with a smooth lingering sherry finish.

Bottle @ home shared with DutchDrebus. Ruby red color, almost no head. Smells a little like barleywine to me. Little sweet, little sour, little wort, malts and grains in the taste. Oily texture. Decent.

(Bottle) Pours a murky brown body with a spare off-white head. Aroma of rich molasses and dark fruits. Flavor of dark fruit (dates, raisins), toasted malt, and a hint of tobacco.

Copper with a small white head. Aroma of sweet caramel with dried fruits, tangerine, vanilla and cinnamon. Sweet fruity and spicy flavour, with a hint of alcohol and a little bitterness. It has old ale qualities, but youíre never in doubt about theAmerican origin.
