COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle poured into pint glass. This is a dark copper beer with essentially no head. The aroma is incredibly rich with caramel malts and a slight toffee scent. The taste is similar to the nose, with an earthy quality to it. It doesnít taste as strong as I expected, and thereís a unique sweetness to it. It also feels lighter than I thought it would. Overall, I approve.

Pours a dark brown color with little to no head. Aroma is sweet and malty. The taste is sweet and thick with sugar. Lots of caramel and scotch ale type flavors. Decent.

Smell is old stale malt. bandaid, gooey, caramel. Pretty smooth given the ABV, but not my favorite smell at all and flavor either. Decent, and better than the dirty bastard but far from anything iíd have again. kind of fruity, caramelly flavored malt. I can see how some would like this.

Really nice, holding up even at the end of a night of great, and usually big beers. The malt is dominant and rich but not cloyingly sweet. The alcohol is warming, not burning.

Copper-ish color. Nice-sized head, average retention, and thin, inconsistent rings of lacing. Smells like whiskey, brandy, or rum - and chocolate, of all things, along with the accompanying molasses. Maybe some fruit and cake, too. Well, that sure is different. Taste: mega boozy malt bomb. Oak. Very tart! Nose burns after first taste. Second taste: similarly potent. Also noticing lots of acid. Says it has the sweetness of a barleywine, but itís not that heavy-bodied despite everything else going on. Wow. Definitely not having an entire bottle of this tonight. A small pour is more than enough. Some neat things going on here, but itís all rather over-the-top. Recommended, but with plenty of caution. My eyes are even watering.

Bottle. Pours a clear, but bright amber/orange with a thin, off white film head. Aroma is large. Sweetness, dark fruits, vanilla, caramel, and barrel notes. Taste is sweet but drinkable. Dark fruits, caramel, vanilla, and an alcohol warmth at the end. Not really an alcohol taste though. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. Smooth texture in the mouth. Very slightly syrupy but not overly sweet with a semi dry finish. Overall very nice. Great sweet, dark fruit flavours blended with awesome barrel notes.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a hazy golden brown, with a moderate khaki head which quickly fades into a disc on the surface, leaving good lacing. Nose is malt and dark fruit. Taste follows the nose, with a hint of hop bitterness on the finish. Very smooth, well-balanced old style alt. Hides the 9.8 % ABV well.

Superior old ale that has a lot going on and stays just on the right side of sweet. Pours the colour of caramel with a solid plug of foam. Sweet and spicy on the nose - potentially too sweet for my taste but reserving judgement at this point. Chewy toffee dominates. Also sultanas, ginger powder and a winey note - Faugeres? First sip, and yep, this is sweet. Damn you, molasses. Soft, smooth palate - lovely. Flavour emphasis is very much on the malt. Restrained oak - tick. Come to think of it, the molasses is reasonably restrained, too - half a tick. Overall, quite a sophisticated flavour profile. Chewy toffee, dried fruit, light oak and brown sugar. A dessert ale but quite satisfying. (355ml bottle from Leura Cellars. BB17/6/14)

On tap at Founders. Oaky sweet, mild hop character. Dark coppery amber clear with thin lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet with alcohol. Bitter notes with big malty finish, light bitter undertones. Light bitter after.

Aroma is malty with a bit of the oak. Taste is also malty with the oak apparent; the oak gives it some nice spice, vanilla or cedar? Sweet from the alcohol content. Good and interesting, though not great.
