This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle poured into pint glass. This is a dark copper beer with essentially no head. The aroma is incredibly rich with caramel malts and a slight toffee scent. The taste is similar to the nose, with an earthy quality to it. It doesnít taste as strong as I expected, and thereís a unique sweetness to it. It also feels lighter than I thought it would. Overall, I approve.

Sampled at Whole Foods, it poured a clear light brown colour with off-white foam, lasting with lace. Malty, bready like a good ESB, caramelly like a good Scotch ale, subtle nutty and toasty notes, complex, but perhaps most notably: very hoppy. Lots more hop bitterness and flavour than an authentic English Old Ale, but delicious in its own arrogant American way. I can totally understand why this one is so highly rated. Definitely something Iíll buy again.

Bottle from Bierkompass!
Bottled 02/24/2009! Pours ruby red with a small off-white head. Aroma of resin, plum, dark dried fruits and caramel. Taste has sweet malt notes, lots of caramel and brown sugar as well as dried fruits and lots of plum. Finish is strong malty, very sweet with brown sugar, fruits, caramel and an earthy undertone. Really nice one, which spent 6 years in the bottle!

Red brown color with foam ring and some particles. The smell is very sugary and creamy with a diffuse fruit note. The taste is weirdly attractive and a little repelling. Sirupy, sugary, fruity (raisins?), caramel, foresty, oily, smooth, round and I donít know what is weird about it. This beer is special and you should try it. Interesting and weird. The taste is intense and suddenly stops a few moments later in the mouth.

Amber color with big beige head. Caramel, tobacco, vanilla, some hops, something you don?t have in other comparable beers I can?t quite describe. Taste is caramel, toffee, more vanilla, piney, bitter boozy finish, plums. Smooth carbonation, thick mouthfeel. Awesome.

On tap at Kilted Mermaid. Pours a beautiful caramel color, tan head that dissapates rapidly leaving minimal lacing. Not much on the nose, taste is molasses and dark fruit. Overall, a really nice old ale.

I like this. I like old ales. I like those dark fruit raisiny notes in old ales. I like those tobacco like hop flavorings that skirt the edges of the ale-fruit. I like getting drunk on a Tuesday night for no reason. and fuck you.

Originally rated on 4/20/14. A viscous amber pour, some floating sediment, slight white rim of head. Smells almost like a barley wine, very sweet malty profile, caramel, plum, vanilla and booze. Tastes much like a very strong barley wine mixed with some scotch. flavors of bourbon, oak, vanilla, tons of barley, caramel, banana, plum, raisins. a full bodied ale with some, but not a whole lot of carbonation. Overall its very heavy, boozy, thick and rich, this would be much better on a cold dreary night instead of a sunny 80 degree afternoon.

I am not a huge fan of scotch ales but this is not bad. Worth a try if you have never had it.

Vermilion reddish orange pour. An intensely complex beer with a rich, sweet malt profile. Alcohol is evident, gives an embracing warmth. Fair amount of bitterness, but it melds well with the sweetness of the malts. Flavors of molasses, caramel, butterscotch, candied sugar, hop spice essence, faint raisin, toffee, woody (oak). Lovely array of flavors smoothing over your palate with a loving finish. One of the best Founderís beers Iíve had, and Iíve had a lot, and a lot have been very good, so that ís saying something.
