This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

From 12oz bottle which was bottled on 2/15/13. This "version" was "Brewed with Molasses and Oak Aged." It pours a deep, slightly cloudy reddish amber color with a very thin tan head which rapidly dissipates to a thin ring. No noticeable lacing. Low to medium carbonation and the head is comprised of very dense bubbles. Mouthfeel is slick and slightly creamy. Very nice. The aroma a sumptuous portent of the awesome taste which is to follow. Primarily the nose follows the taste except there is no detectible hop aroma. Taste is moderately sweet without being cloying. Flavors of carmel, dark bread, molasses, figs, vanilla bean, and raisins dominate balanced by a very modest bitterness from the roasted malt and the 50 IBU's of bitterness contributed by the hops. The oak bourbon barrel overtones are quite noticeable and add in a very positive way to the aroma and taste of the beer. They are perfectly integrated into the nose, the taste, and the finish. The finish allows a little more of the hop bitterness to linger but there is a nice sustained carmel sweetness providing a perfect balance. The 9.8% ABV is well hidden, with the beer providing only mild alcohol heat. A very drinkable beer that is complex yet perfectly balanced. This may be one of my top ten favorites. This beer could be reasonably categorized as a barley wine rather than as a classic "Old Ale" such as Theakston's Old Peculiar. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a slightly hazy reddish copper color with a medium sized frothy off white head. The aroma is sweet roasted malts, brown sugar, alcohol. The taste is predominately malts and the alcohol is very noticeable.

Malty, heavy. Not much aroma. Not my type of beer. Likely won't buy again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hazy brown pour. Aromas of leather, toffee, brown sugar and grapefruit. Flavours the same with a fading citrus and piney bitterness. Oak, lightly oxidized but good.

Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. Pours rusty copper with a little white head. The aroma features dried fruitiness, sweet caramel maltiness and a touch of spiciness – fairly rich all in all. Taste offers plenty of variety as well: caramel malt sweetness features initially with dry fruity elements such as fig and raisin, later a subtle hoppy touch rises and adds color to the drying finish. Also some lingering oak and vanilla appear, validating the label "old" in the style category. Excellent taste both in depth and balance. The palate is medium to full bodied, soft in carbonation. A great beer in all respects.

Corposa, cremosa e fantastica!

From bottle in English pint glass. Aroma of molasses, faint vanilla and oak. Rich malt profile and strong EtOH in the finish. One big burly barley brew.

Shared bottle. Pours is dark hazy amber with small head that lasts only for a while. Aroma of caramel, malts, yeast, light biscuity. Solid malty base, light sweet, light bitter, caramel mouthfeel. Heavy body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation, light bitter finish. Nice aroma, superb taste, overally awesomely ballanced beer, recommended.

A very nice barleywine style beer. Pours a beautiful deep red with a thin white head. Smells decent, of barleywine and a toastiness. Taste is classic barleywine, with chocolate off the bat, and some vanilla and spice in the finish, along with a lingering sweetness. Had on tap at Albany Taproom.
