COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

The aroma is hard to place - sort of like a scotch ale with its maltiness, but a little more spicy. Pours a great amber color with a surprisingly large off white head that takes a while to dissipate. The taste is malty but not sweet, instead bitter with some boozy undertones. Very drinkable for 9.8% ABV. Call me crazy, but I found it to taste like an imperial IPA crossed with a coffee stout. I don’t always like oak aging, but it really comes across nicely in this one, enhancing the aftertaste considerably. The palate was slick with a bitter and slightly oaky finish that lasts until your next sip. I was reluctant to try this because it says it is similar to a barleywine, which I am not a fan of. The barleywine characteristics in this one are slight, and overall it’s a must try. Founders, you have impressed me once again.

Bärnstensfärgad med litet ljust skum. Doftar grönsaker och spritigt.. Smakar bättre med maltig dominans men väldigt söt och lite alkohol.

An explosion of grape upon first taste. I prefer this flavor to the raisin that is commonly found in these types of beer. The fruit tastes more alive. Strong caramel nose with secondary licorice Boozuness is obvious and not recessed. Very sweet though with almost no bitterness. You can tell it s not a barley wine because the hop flavor doesn’t really exist much here. I like that about it though. Malt purity

A well crafted and interesting beer. Dark fruits, vanilla, whiskey, maple syrup. Only complaint is that it’s overly sweet, almost sickly.. hence the lower score. You have to be a sweet tooth too really appreciate this one.

From 345 ml bottle. Pours a clear brick red with some orange highlights and a creamy off-white head. Aromas of soft fruit (fresh pear, apple), flowers, raisins and caramel. Taste is sweet malt and caramel at first before a light almost peppery bitterness creeps in. Some slightly hot alcohol emerges as well. Lingering fruity and spicy finish. Excellent example of the style.

355ml 2014 years vintage brown bottle, label has nice artwork of a curmudgeon, poured into a snifter glass. Appearance is clear burgundy colored with a small beige head that dissipated quickly, leaving no lacing. Aroma of raisins, apricot marmalade, toffee and vanilla. Flavours of raisins, apricot marmalade, vanilla, toffee, caramel and oak wood notes. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Palate is medium bodied, slightly sticky texture and soft carbonation. Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale is an exceptional Old Ale, balanced and with a well masked alcohol without being too sweet.
