This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Tap at Founders. Brown pour with a bit of head. Aroma is malty, toasted bread, a bit of molasses, almost smoky. Taste is sweet and malty, a touch of that classic roastiness I usually get from the scottish ales. Palate is well carbonated and full. Tasty stuff.

12oz bottle. Nearly clear brown-orange color with some sediment haze, bubbles sticking to side of glass and a minimal head. This is my first time trying the "old ale" style. First impression, quite an aroma! Ranger Bob from Dutch’s Wine Cellar told me this had a molasses flavor, and he wasn’t kidding... Sweet malt aroma like I’ve never encountered it, but it’s very interesting. Syrupy texture but it seems appropriate in this case. Slight alcohol in the aftertaste. Very smooth finish. This gets better after just a couple sips, I could easily picture myself with one of these in an old-style port-pub.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2015 Fantastic barleywine hybrid is the best description that I can give. Big bold flavor with a heathy dose of etoh.

From notes. First reviewed 1/10/2011. Served on tap in a taster glass at the Haymarket Founders event. Curmudgeon has a dark cherry color, existing between hazy and transparent. An off-white head fades to a ring but leaves layers of lace. Brandy and ethyl alcohol kick me in the nose, with an earthy covering to the sweet dark fruit and malt aromas. Sweet brandy, caramel malt, and some dark fruits open up the flavor. Figs, raisins, and plums. Sweet all the way through. Some light earthy flavors slowly coat the tongue, adding some depth and complexity. This definitely gets better as it warms. The mouthfeel is smooth, brandy-like, with light to medium carbonation. Sticky, with a fuller than medium body. A fun and complex beer. Sweet, with lots of bite, so I am not sure I could drink this all night.

35,5 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 09.03.2010
Dark red colour, disappearing head. Aroma is hoppy and sweet with fruits – feels a bit like scotch ale. Palate is a bit too high on CO2. Flavour is sweeti sh with ripe fruits, some raisins, plums and hints of sugar. Too sweet stuff for me.

Draught @ Sivukirjasto. Rated on 18.12.2014.
Aroma is sweet with toffee and caramel. Feels syrupy. Flavour has woody tones, sweet toffee, syrup, caramel, vanilla and alcohol. Vanilla grows stronger towards the end of the glass. Feels like an American strong ale at all its sweetness.

12oz bottle dated 4/6/12 poured into tulip glass. Aroma: malt, alcohol, banana, bubblegum, vanilla, woody, dark fruits Appearance: hazy reddish coppery color with little to no head Taste: very sweet, mild bitter, almost no sour in the taste Palate: medium carbonation, full body, oily texture. Aftertaste is medium bitter, mild sour Overall: This is very rich and similar to a barley wine. I like it. The alcohol is surprisingly hidden well for 9.8%. It is definitely a sipper.

Bottle at home. Hazy orange pour with floaties, almost no head. Aroma of dusty malts, sugars, honey, old hops, tutti frutti, nectarine and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and smooth, quite fruity with ripe fruits and a huge body. Although this would normally be way too sweet for me, this one can have it due to its smoothness.

12oz. bottle shared by Dave S. Pour is amber/orange, with very little initial head, rapidly becoming no head. Aroma is caramel. malty, sweet, some toffee. Much like a typical barley wine. Taste is smooth, full bodied, malty, with toffee and a bit boozy. Finish is well balanced, sweet, with some heat.
