COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2006 BOTTLE RATING: a fine brew, but a bit dissapointing for an old ale...too much bourbon, too little caramel...just way too boozy TAP RATING 29 AUGUST 2005finally the curmudgeon has risen....a dark brown body (color of a chesnut in the light)...aroma is wonderful...full of sweet malts, grapefruit hops...flavor isnt quite as expected with an old ale...full of piney hops, some sweet malts, and a bite that is common in their Dirty Bastard and Devil Dancer...i agree with silphium as well...his rating is right on the money 8 4 7 3 14

2006 bottle. Mahogany colored pour. Clear with suspended particles. No head and a slick appearance. The aroma has candy, spice, and a light sweetness that is spicy and fruity at the same time. Very peculiar tasting stuff. Light sweetness with heavy malts that include caramel then moving to Belgian hard candy, some kind of fruit and loads of spice (cinnamon-nutmeg ). Finishes with a light bitterness. Full creamy body. Very odd, but not unenjoyable. I donít think Iíll seek this one out again.

This was better than most bourbon barrel aged beers Iíve had, but please, Iím begging for this fad to slow down. Pours very dark copper with beige head that dwindles fairly quickly. Aroma is bourbon - traces of the malt as in there, but they are hidden by the dominant bourbon. Medium to full bodied beer with light carbonation. LOTS of bourbon on teh taste. There is some malt, but hard to make out characteristics of it. After a while the bourbon falls out a little bit and the malt comes out more with a very musty caramel taste. I wish I wouls have had this beer before the bourbon barrel aged version. If I want bourbon, Iíll buy a damn bottle - please stop doing this to the beers. At the very least state it is barrel aged on the bottle or 4 pack holder.

Bottle from Pailheadenstein. Murky brown colored, no real head formation and no lacing left. Aroma is kind of pleasant to me. Full malty, bits of molasses and fruit. Full bodied with a very low carbonation level. Very sweet tasting, tons of residual sugars are left in this one. Alcohol is pretty up front, I didnít pick up much bourbon notes in aroma or flavor with this, not that that is bad. Decent, alcohol is a bit overbearing, could use a touch more carbonation but decent.

Lent half a bottle by the host with the most nbutler11. A prickly nose of poppy, powder, flour and chocolate. Stationary brown-grey body. Taste is noticeably creamy, with an odd taste of coriander and caramelized malts creeping in. Rather tastes like a figgy quad. The spiciness really kept me from falling for this beer - I should have loved it looking back on these adjectives but it just struck me as sharp when I had it.

Bottle. Pours copper/orangish/brown. Interesting taste of carmel, malts, and hopy spices. Slight fruit undertone, warm smooth mouthfeel. Taste is big, rich, and full. You’ll want to sip this one. Not lacking in complexity at all. 9.3% ABV is not overwhelming. I’m going to attempt to age my 2nd bottle for around 12 months and see the difference.

Pours a nice copper with a decent beige. Strong bourbon, alcohol and rum notes with some raisin and twizzler notes. The taste is extremely oaky with lots of alcohol and bourbon. Nice sweet vanilla and caramel notes with subtle hints of chocolate and dark fruits. Pretty good, but way way way too heavy on the oak.

tronranerís Xmas Eve Eve Eve Tasting. Sample from a bottle thanks to Suttree. Hazy orange body with small floaties. Slight whitish carbonation builds but disappears instantly. A very syrupy aroma, raisins, rum, syrup, vanilla. Taste is maple syrup with a light alcohol, brown sugar and a touch of hops.
