This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a frothy off white head. The aroma is rich fruity malt, sweet treacle and alcohol. The flavour is medium sweet, light bitter with a smooth rich fruit alcohol liqourice palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation and a long bitter finish.

Draft - Spices, orange and fruity esters. Cloudy copper with a thin beige head. Floral, orange and a bit of boozy sweetness. Different and nice.

Unique aroma. I think someone else said "toasty apple", which is a good deScription of the unique character in the aroma. Color is a dark amber / copper. I had thought an old ale should be slightly darker, and I think a little darker color would add to this by adding a sort of old, woody, seafarer sense to the beer. Oak, molasses, and malt blend well. It’s nice to get a unique flavor that can be a little subtle. Good beer all around, and nice to have as a change of pace, but if I were looking for the malty, caramel-ly flavor in this beer, I’d probably go for a Dirty Bastard. They obviously brew way better than I do, but if I made this as an old ale and tasted it, I’d think that I needed to darken in a little and raise the oak and molasses flavors slightly.

Squat US 12oz bottle. Great label featuring an old chap who appears to be constipated and without hygienic paper products. Not sure what he’s sitting on. Clear, orange-bronze beer, respectable tea-stained head. Malty aroma, pleasantly floral-toasty-woody, date/raisin/prune fruitiness... almost suggests a spiced ale of some sort. Woody bitter, sweetish as it warms, as with the aroma, the flavor profile suggests that it would be a suitable backbone for *ahem* pumpkin beer or winter warmers. An implied allspice, and some faint mashed banana(? - weird) tones. Definite vanilla tones. Mouthy body, the alcohol-spice bitterness grows and starts to cling - which is really its only flaw. Warming. ABV was masked well, but I could definitely see this base with barrel aging. Market Square Liquors.

’Old Ale’ is not a style that you tend to see many of around Founders has put together an offering that showcases the sweetness and caramel feel of this molasses forward beer. This is ’oak aged’, which adds a woodsiness and underpins the heavy malt feel here.

Fruit. Sweet. Malty. Pours a dark orange amber with a thick slowly fading off white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. Thick full mouthfeel. Very smooth. Clean. Sweet. Molasses. Earthy. Oaky. Slight bitterness on the finish with the slightest lingering warmth. Very nice.

Bottle, 07/11/2014. Pours ruby brown, nearly clear with slight haze, light wispy head. Aroma is fruity malts, touch of cotton candy, caramel and with mild orange hop character, slightly grassy, mild wood finish. Taste caramel with piney hop middle. some roast adding to moderate bitterness, fruity undertones, some booze and vanilla, wood in the finish. Medium thick body. Nice.
