This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle; poured an amber color with a whitish head. Aroma of booze, caramel, molasses, booze and cookies. Flavor was not as robust, but good. Cookies and molasses, some booze; a bit dry, could use some sweetness for balance. A bit of earthiness in the finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a reddish clear color with a small off-white head. The aroma is quite interesting, itís very smelly with gingerbread and other spicy notes. Taste is very good, matches aroma. Lots of complexity, alcohol is insidious. Resinous mouthfeel. Not my favorite, itís borderline skunky, but interesting enough to keep me coming back for another!

Slight caramel aroma in a medium brown cloudy ale. Very malty like a barleywine but not nearly as smooth. Strong flavor but a bitter finish.

Pours a redish brown body with a thin head. Faint malty aroma. Well balanced malty taste with tones of sugars and wood. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear brown body. This is one malty SOB. Has a big sweet, fruity aroma. Caramel, brown sugar, coffee cake with some port-like alcohol (probably the barrel) on top. The sweetness doesnít have the sharp caramelized notes of brown sugar or molasses but rather retains their sweet elements and therefore is very smooth and silky with the oily alcohol pooled on top. The same big malts are in the body but itís marred by pine needle gin. Caramel, chocolate and coffee cake start the flavor with pine needles, alcohol, and unripe apples finishing it off. Good mouthfeel. Iíd enjoy the beer more if the alcohol wasnít so gin-like.

Unfiltered ruby-orange in color. Broken layer of foam settles into a tightly woven collar of dirty-white cream. Immensely aromatic notes of fresh-cut oak, perfumey tannins, raisins, rhubarb, and vanilla-infused caramel. Soft, densely packed bubbles grace the tongue. An unappealing arrangement of rhubarb and bourbon greets the palate. Bourbon is noticeably soft and composed, and also possesses a fair amount of cleanliness, but the tannins immediately weaken the bodyís strength. An assortment of fruity esters lurks beneath the richness and lends a complementary slickness to the pungent oak. Tannins reinforce the medicinal astringency, but it stops just shy of becoming overbearing as itís quickly muffled by the bodyís plush softness. Hop impact remains minimal up until a hint of bitter grapefruit rind skims the tongue. Alcohol heightens as the flavors evolve, as do a body-reinforcing caramelized sugar and tannic tug. The pungency of the oak negates much of the soothingly soft malts, but a softened oak-derived vanillin sweetness is there to compensate. Flavors lose intensity at the finish, due to the heightening tannic acidity which leaves a trail of candy apples and medicine in its wake. The aroma has plenty of power, but not much allure, and the wood is too raw/fresh tasting and tannic. Had they chosen a barrel with a deeper level of toast, this might have been blissful. I must say, however, that the magic of bottle conditioning is to credit for the wonderful carbonic texture. Not too shabby.

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2010 This is one ale not lacking for aroma and flavor. Aromas of ripe fruits, including plum and strawberry, sweet malts and alcohol. Bourbon, caramel, cotton candy and plum dominate the flavor. Wood from the barrel is also folded into the flavors. A slightly bitter taste ó grapefruit ó sneaks in toward the end. The body is thin and nicely carbonated. Acidic and dry finish. Dark brown/copper translucent pour with thin head. Update: 2-11-10. Amber body. Short, off-white head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of bourbon, wood, ripe dark fruits, plum, strawberries. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Very sweet start turns boozy with lots of whiskey notes. Peppery bitterness from alcohol and hops linger in the finish. Overly sweet. Lots of alcohol. Not as god as I remember it.
