This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Pours a clear copper from the bottle with thin ring of off-white lacy head that sticks moderately. Aroma of oak and vanilla, brown sugar, booze and a hint of peppery spice. Taste follows, but booze is covered by nice notes of vanilla and molasses. Bittersweet finish, pretty damn good.

Rich, cold amber. White ring head. Old paper and oak aroma. Medium-light body for such a strong beer. A little alcohol in the nose. Smooth balanced flavor with, caramel malt well balanced with light bitterness. Good, strong ale.

On tap at Founders. Copper pour. Nice lacing throughout. You get sweetness and molasses in the aroma. More of the same on the taste but really nice caramel malt flavor. Balanced nicely with a touch of hop bitterness in the finish. This one went down way to smooth for the ABV. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ the Brew Kettle: Dark copper w/ a lasting off white head. Alcohol, caramel and lemony hops with hints of roast fading in and out. A little bit of Old Spice from the guy sitting next to me intermingles with the toasted malts that get stronger with warmth. Well balanced with a dry finish for a big beer. Caramel flavor, citrusy hop lingering into the finish and aftertaste. Toasted and bready malts as it warms in between. Moderate esters. Aftertaste is toasted malt and citrusy hop. Full body, lower carbonation w/ a well hidden alcohol. Very smooth. Needs to age some for a true old ale, but very good and barleywinish for now, will probably improve with age.

On-tap at Pizza Plant Transit. It was so good it was as if it was brewed right here. Dark boddy with thin head. Stouty roast aroma. Hoppy and spicy. Medium-full body. I like the style, it’s more drinkable than a barleywine. The understated carbonation at this location does it justice.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2006 Is this beer or bourbon? I have never tasted a beer like this before, it tastes like bourbon, the taste of beer is non-existent. I am not sure how to rate this brew. I bought this non-refrigerated, the case says must be refrigerated, is this why it tastes like bourbon and not beer? A hazy brownish-orange with no head. I do know one thing, this beer/bourbon has a high alcohol content that kicks you in the ass!

Bottle: Caramel head, deep ruby red body. For them talking up the maltiness, I tasted a good blast of bitter hops, perhaps drawn out by the alcohol. Bourbon character messed up with the strange, sweet yet weak malt. My 4-pack was dominated by alcohol. After one of these my friend asked if I was drinking whiskey from my ceramic mug. He could smell the booze on my breath from 3 feet away. 4 pack = $13!!
