Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Pours a deep cherry red, hazy, with good head but minimal lacing. Aroma of whiskey. This ale has a wonderul bourbon whiskey flavor, as much as you could possibly want, yet without coming across as a "whiskey wannabe" -- it’s an ale all the way. Additional notes of coconut, brown sugar, oak, some cherry. Nice alcohol warmth. I’m a variety lover, yet this is one of the few beers I feel like I could enjoy every day.

Bottle courtesy AllAboutStout, pours dark mahogany with a fizzy, cream colored head that lingers. Nose is a bit subdued, with dried fruit standing out the most, along with a touch of malty sweetness and bourbon. The flavor is very rich and complex, with the same dried fruit and sweet malt with bourbon smoothing out the flavor. I thought I was misplacing the flavor, but then I read that the ’06 was barrel aged in bourbon barrels and there it was! I am a big fan of this one.

12oz bottle pours deep brown with a creamy tan head. Big time malt, sweet, bread, honey and some smoke in the aroma. Very sweet body with alot of caramel and dark fruit like raisin and plums. There was also some oak and bourbon in there. Great beer.

One of my favorite ales. I’ve had fresh and aged 1 year. Both wonderful in different ways. The fresh was slightly floral, piney, sweet, wonderful in nose and taste. A fantastic palate. The year old has less hop character and almost no pine, but smells and tastes of carmel and some chocolate. Both beautiful to look at. A fantastic beer.

I found this to be very complex...when cold it hits you with a light hoppy taste followed by a deep smoky body..the finish is dry and whole. As it warms the smokiness gets lighter and the hops are much more pronounced throughout..pretty amazing actually! Good stuff

Bottle from Beermerchants.com. Pours an amber/brown with a gradually dissipating head which leaves a nice lacing on top. Aromas of toffee, caramel, citrus, demerara sugar. Flavours of toffee, licorice, malts, caramel, citrus notes. Nice throat warming feel. Finsihes sweet, malty and very hoppy.

12 oz bottle from Princeton’s. Brown pour, thick foamy white head. Malty, barley aromas, some oak. Sweet, intense flavors... definitely can taste the heavy malt characteristics. Surprisingly very drinkable, nice smooth sweet finish. BIG beer with lots of great flavors going on.

Poured a deep amber with little to no head. Bourbon, and floral scent. Complex malty taste with a high hop. Taste lasts, is not bitter and leaves a clean fresh finish. Would recommend.
