3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (2011, I think). Poured a medium amber color with minimal white head. Aroma was a bit sweet with a hint of alcohol. The flavor was some caramel and malt with just a touch of hops. Iíd get this one again, it was pretty good.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sugary aroma. Slightly cloudy red pour. Single finger head. Thin mouth. Taste is full of caramel and alcohol. Sugar and candy dominate here. Very sweet. Lots of alcohol burn. Hints of vanilla. I wasnít crazy about this.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I believe this is my first Old Ale. Drinking out of a DFH signature glass. Pours a light amber with a small head and lots of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass and rising. Slight sweetish aroma that Iím not going to pretend to tell you what it is. Taste has a bite, must be the alcohol content. Canít put a finger on the flavor other than alcohol, if bittersweet is a flavor than thatís what Iíll call it (that does not mean I dislike it). For me it is a different style than Iím use to and I donít know how many more Old Ales Iíll run into but I think there are other styles I prefer tasting over this. Founders is one of my favorite brewers and Iím glad to have the chance to taste this ale.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The aroma is hard to place - sort of like a scotch ale with its maltiness, but a little more spicy. Pours a great amber color with a surprisingly large off white head that takes a while to dissipate. The taste is malty but not sweet, instead bitter with some boozy undertones. Very drinkable for 9.8% ABV. Call me crazy, but I found it to taste like an imperial IPA crossed with a coffee stout. I donít always like oak aging, but it really comes across nicely in this one, enhancing the aftertaste considerably. The palate was slick with a bitter and slightly oaky finish that lasts until your next sip. I was reluctant to try this because it says it is similar to a barleywine, which I am not a fan of. The barleywine characteristics in this one are slight, and overall itís a must try. Founders, you have impressed me once again.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
What an amazing beer, pours dark amber with an off white head that persists through, smells of loads of caramel and sweetness in general, taste of vanilla, molasses and some caramel sweetness, the back is brought up with some alcohol to balance,

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled 2/06/14 and poured 4/15/14. $3.49 a single.
Appearance: Pours a "quiet" red/orange color with a nice off-white head and lacing at the start.
Smell: Wow. Dark fruits, barrel, molasses sweetness, oak... just as I expected from the label and style. Thereís also a slight hint of booze as well.
Taste/feel: Just looking at it in the glass, it looks sweet. Thatís probably just because I know thereís molasses in it though. This beer is sweetsweetsweet, which you should figure if you know the style, see that this beer is brewed with molasses, or see that the IBUs are "only" 50 IBUs. Molasses, candied dark fruits, oak, rich and heavy caramel malts with a bit of a toasted malt aftertaste with an underlying subtle bitterness to keep it from being sickly sweet. Just looking at it in the glass should give you an idea of how it feels. Very mild carbonation with a pretty full body. Some would call it "flat", but itís a mild carbonation that Iím liking for this beer. Also, the body is big, but itís not to the point where itís syrupy/cloying. Then again, the nice depth of flavor also helps that. Donít get me wrong, it IS a very sweet beer, but itís not a chore to drink by any means. 9.8% is hidden perfectly as well.
Overall, an incredibly tasty choice for those who dig a big, bold, malty, sweet beer. It may not be something that Iíd personally drink very often (Iím already a "ticker" as it is...), but there is absolutely no denying that this is a phenomenal beer that warrants a try to any beer aficionado. I may go buy myself another single just to see how this thing ages. It is sweet as hell, but it is equally as tasty.

Bottle @ home. Amber colour, beige foam. Complex fruity aroma with notes of stone fruit (plums, apricot), caramel, brown sugar and spices. Sweet with light bitter finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hearty aroma of molasses, brown sugar and hints of cask aging. Orange with medium hazing. Very sweet flavor, recalls spiced rum at first and bourbon on finish. This isnít too profound though, just enough of a hint. Smooth and a rather easy drink - not to infer t is light though. Another winner for Founders.

Bottle to pint glass. A-malty, sweet. M-close to a Barleywine in profile. Nice old ale. F-sweetness and a thick coating. Really good beer.

Bottle from Beer Swap Saturday, thanks boss! Pours orange amber with a scant white head. Aroma has caramel malt, red fruits, cinnamon, clove. Flavor is warm and cinnamon/nutmeg spicy with a caramel molasses backbone thatís not too cloying. Nice.
