COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle (2011, I think). Poured a medium amber color with minimal white head. Aroma was a bit sweet with a hint of alcohol. The flavor was some caramel and malt with just a touch of hops. I’d get this one again, it was pretty good.

Pours dark brown, small head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, some coffee. Sweet with quite high bitterness. A lot of oak. Overall a good beer but the oak becomes a bit overpowering after a while. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep reddish-brown body, medium cream head. Indistinct aroma of sweet, candyish malts with hints of hops bitterness. Served too cold. Surprisingly bitter, piney flavor with rather nondescript sweet malts (hints of berries, cherry), caramel, and toast, but not with the intense focus on the malt bill as suggested in the official description.

Birra particolare e spettacolare.

330ml bottle served in a snifter. A: Pours a magnificent clear amber color forming a small but medium bubbled light yellow head. Low retention and only few spotty lacings left in the glass S: Impressive smell sherry and woody. Delicious. Very sweet and fruity as well. Strong notes of oak, bourbon, toffee and caramel malts. Strong English Old Ale character. Notes of grapes and raisins T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of oak, toffee, caramel malts, crystal malts, bourbon, grapes and dry raisins. Light hops bitterness as expected by the style M: Heavy, creamy and molasses body. Low carbonation. Sweet malts and woody aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Classic English Old Ale. Just another masterpiece brewed by Founders [ BA Review @ 12/24/2013 ]

Poured from bottle, dark amber with almost no head. Aroma is strong with distinctive notes of dark bread, honey, resin and herbs. Taste is a real explosion. Full bodied and well balanced, notes of dried fruit, honey, pine and dark bread. Slight bitterness leads a long and lingering finish. Real nice one!

Aroma of treacle, reminds me of my mum baking cakes when I was a kid; looks deep brown, hint of gold, clear; negligble head and looks flat; tastes smooth; nice tingle of carbonation; lots of sticky malts; hint of whiskyish saltiness; ok, but far from amazing and difficult to plough through - would be better served in nips.
