COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Lightly chilled:Kasteel glass. Great looking dark orange/brown liquid. Small creamy, head. Very slow rising bubbles and nice, lacing. Overall earthy aroma. Caramel based aroma with wood, soil, light hops and tasteful alcohol. Texture is very soft, almost light, though this is a thick beer. Upfront caramel, wood, fruit, and soil. Before the finish is more wood, caramel, and a little alcohol on the sides of the mouth. Finish is long with light earthy hop, with strong caramel, wood, toast, and light alcohol. After opening up a bit, becomes a very well put together, mellow, but flavorful and interesting shot at the old ale style. Very Respectable

Pours hazy copper brown with a thick off white head. Nose is coconut, alcohol ethers, caramel, wood and leather. Taste is sweet with minimal bitter only showing through on the end of the finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Long aftertaste and heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Beer pours a red amber, cloudy with a white lacing, no head; that fizzes out pretty soon after pouring. Smells of dark fruits and alcohol, most particularly figs, whiskey and cherry. Im sure this is good for a whiskey barrel aged ale it is pretty smooth and balances well with the malt. I’m never a fan of dark fruit with high alcoholic beers. Combined with the whiskey it taste’s like I’m drinking something quite strong though the taste isn’t overly strong and their is no burn. Finishes a tad bitter with dry taste of figs.

12 ounce pour at the Founders Brewery. Amber color bordering on red with a good dose of palate sizzle. Raisins, figs, and that sort of fig-newton dipped in whiskey flavor. In other words, it has that fruit-alcohol presence and while it tastes strong fisted, it’s not nearly as strong as you’d expect from a 9.8 abv. It’s not necessarily my favorite from Founders, but it’s high quality nonetheless.

I smell cherry, alcohol, oak, whiskey, plenty of malts and a little funk. Taste is caramel, light pine hops, a bit of whiskey, cherry, melons, brown sugar and bready malts. Alcohol is noticable but incorporated well. Palate is medium with some carbonation. Overall a little harsh but it was very different and interesting. Would age well for sure.

Aroma- caramel, dark fruits, oak, bourbon, maple syrup Appearance- copper/rust orange, thin white head, massive alcohol presence Taste- big malty sweetness upfront, caramel, figs, maple syrup Palate- slick mouthfeel, decent body, feels right Overall- More like a barleywine than an Old Ale to me but very nice nevertheless. Complex and rich but highly drinkable. Founders, as always, delivers.

Pours amber with an off white head and sweet aroma of malts and hops. Taste is complex, sweet and of malts, hops, vanilla alcohol, and whiskey notes with a nice, smooth finish. Great brew from Founders.

Bottled 04/19/12. ***FRESH*** Not a huge fan of this fresh. Cherry cough syrup in the nose and the taste. Cherry tinted dark brown appearance, clear, with zero head. Nail polish scent, cherry cough syrup. Medium bodied, sticky texture. Sweet tinge to a hop front and then that cherry cough syrup with a hot finish. I’m curious to see if this improves with age.

12oz bottle with 4/6/12 stamped on the neck.

APPEARANCE: Poured reddish-brown in color with over two fingers of cream colored head. When held up to the light, it was more of a murky orangish-red. The head settled to a thin layer after about 10 minutes, but left behind plenty of nice lacing on the glass (especially for the high alc. content).

AROMA: Carmel malt, molasses, brown sugar, cough syrup, cinnamon, and some wood in the nose.

TASTE: I’m getting some nice caramel malt up front followed closely by a good amount of hop bitterness. Very sticky feel between the resinous hops and the sweet malt. They also work well together helping to balance the beer. Finish has a touch of alcohol, but I like it.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body (boarderline syrupy) with fairly light carbonation.

MOREY’S BOTTOM LINE: Very tasty, and a nice beer to sip on. Well made, but nothing really jumps out and wows you either. This would be a good campfire beer on a cool evening.

Aroma of honey, malt and slight dark fruit. Pours dusty red with a small film. Taste is very earthy with malt, pine hop, and some dirt. Sweet without sensing the 9.8% alcohol. Good.
