COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2013 Very nice aroma of raisins, figs and dark fruits. The taste is similar with some additions of oak. The oakiness gets a little bit dominating for my taste. Should maybe have been a little sweeter. Anyway, I really liked this one!

Bottle. Pours adark amber color with a small head. Aroma of malt, dark fruit, and hint of booze. Taste of malt, dark fruit and spice. Mild bitterness and a dry finish. Moderate body, smooth with a bit of a boozy feel. Nice but expected a more robust beer.

Balanced like a teeter totter with twins on it. I guess.... It’s equal parts really bitter and really sweet.... The word roasty comes to mind... But yep. Good.

It seems this thing needs to mellow while sitting for a while. As served, it was a murky light brown with quickly dissipating off-white foam. Smells of cooked sugar, booze, and wood. Flavors are too varied. Some sweet molasses with alcohol and oak. Slightly rough finish/linger of woodiness. The first disappointment I’ve had from Founders. Perhaps expectations are high here.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Fergus. Pours mostly clear orange with mild particulate presence and a frothy off-white head. Lots of ripe and tangy fruits in the nose, some berries, caramel, spices. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with gooey malts, some cinnamon, rich berries, subtle spice, some leafy hops. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes warming and lightly sticky, with some further spice character, toffee, bread, slight dates. Good stuff.

Bottle thanks to Fergus. It pours orange-amber with a small white head. The nose is sweet, juicy, lots of dried fruits, raisin, sultana, fruit cake, muffin, candy and spice. The taste is bitter-sweet, woody, leather, toffee, honeycomb, fruit cake, loads of dried fruits and hefty booze with a warming finish. Fullish body and average carbonation. Pretty big on the booze, but not bad anyhow.
