COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle to glass mug. Pours a caramel color, cloudy and almost no head. Looks like good lacing. AVB is evident in this one. Itís almost too boozy, however I kinda like it. Itís barleywine-esque, like the description says. I would keep these in the beer cellar...

Bottle, 07/11/2014. Pours ruby brown, nearly clear with slight haze, light wispy head. Aroma is fruity malts, touch of cotton candy, caramel and with mild orange hop character, slightly grassy, mild wood finish. Taste caramel with piney hop middle. some roast adding to moderate bitterness, fruity undertones, some booze and vanilla, wood in the finish. Medium thick body. Nice.

Orange- red color, small head died fast. Lots of molasses and alcohol in the nose. This is a good beer but a little hot for my liking. Iím hoping this will benefit from a year or two in the cellar.

Pours a translucent rusty red brown with a soapy yellow tan head that settles slowly. A bit of wet, short-lived lacing. Aroma is earthy oak, malts, molasses and darkfruits. Taste is a nice balance of dank and musty oak, sweet molasses and vanilla and prunes and a bed of bitterness. Finishes with a warming swarm of alcohol. Super smooth. Best of its style that I've had. Yum.

Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a very clear amber with only a very small sticky head. Nose is heavy sticky molasses, brown sugar, caramel and slight oak. Taste is much the same. Very thick and sticky. Toffee, caramel, oak and vanilla dominate. Slight heat from the alcohol rounds it out. Would probably benefit from ageing.

355l Bottle from Beers of Europe website:
Strong with lots of sweetness & sugar plus some treacle. Strong caramel malts & oak just about mask the alcohol completely, only a touch comes through. Toffee, dark fruits & earthy hops all make an appearance & the beer is quite complex. Rich smelling & rounded out with some background fruits & hints of vanilla.
Deep caramel amber with a thin, 0.5cm foamy head thatís slightly off-white with okay retention given the abv. of the beer. It sits as a fine lacing just about covering the surface & thereís some sediment at the bottom of the glass.
Sweet & malty with caramel & toffee coming through alongside sugar & some alcohol that seems a touch stronger than the nose hinted it at. Dark fruits & pleasant oak & vanilla come through with some plum & raisins at the end.
Smooth with a medium to thick body that hints at being creamy. Soft carbonation & hints of alcohol from the start. Very sweet, rich, complex & definitely strong but there is enough going on to help it down easier than expected.

A beer that I really enjoyed and one that Iím glad I let sit for a while before opening up. Despite the strength of the beer it was one that went down pretty well with a great balance between flavours & I could see this being one that I would pick up again in future, assuming of course I can find it easily enough.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. Clear, burnished copper colour. Minimal head. Gingery, syrupy, sweet malt. Orange spice. Taste is sweet, spicy, herby, toffee dry. Palate is sticky, slow moving, sweet creaminess. Big, long, spicy bitter finish. Huge. Sticky. Lovely.

Amber brown pour with small off white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, vanilla and slight fruit. Taste of malts, caramel, toffee, prune, figs, vanilla and faint fruitiness and oakiness. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, nice beer.

Deep amber/red pour, slightly hazy with very little head. Lovely aromas to it, deep honey, caramel, and top-shelf booze. The flavor is all sweet malts and alcohol, pleasant but a little cloying. Very little hop presence, true to style but surprising from Founderís. Thick, sticky and lightly carbonated mouthfeel typifies the style. All considered this is a decent sipping beer, seems like it would be great in a snifter by the fire.
