DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 9, 2007 Bottle kindly shared by Chuck. Dark brown body under a light tan head. Brown sugar and clovey nutmeg in the aroma. Huge sweet flavor on this guy - condensed, caramelized brown sugar, light pepper and nutmeg, finishing with fennel seed hop bitterness. Big flavors but it’s just big for bigness’ sake - BFD. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Oct 6, 2007 MBGF07. Hazy dark amber with a small beige head. The aroma is moderately sweet, vinous and spicy with caramel, toffee, and berry. The flavor is moderately sweet and floral with caramel, herbs, light pepper and ginger. Medium/full body is soft with light carbonation. Had this again out of a bottle and it was much sweeter than I remembered and would have rated a bit lower than this. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 4, 2007 Expensive ass bottle from Capones. Sampled with stegosaurus. Coppery /brown pour with off white head.Spice and brown sugar aroma. Sugar, alcohol and caramel taste. Blended rather well. The cerimonial hump of the bottle was done. mj (4971), Colorado, USA Oct 4, 2007 Shared by kmweaver. Strange beer. Clear (filtered?) medium dark red and orange toned body. Huge nose of sherry, rose petals, chili and floral spices. Palate is light, elevating, highly alcoholic but not heavy up front. Turns to bitter and biting across the middle, before finishing ridiculously sweet and overbearing, nearly making my face cringe. Sticky, rich and sweet, spiced with grapefruit flavored ginger and sugary rose pedals. I thought I was going to have to pour mine out, but with some tobacco the sweetness was cut into very well, and it ended up complimenting the smoke much more than stout or hopped barley wine did. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Oct 4, 2007 22oz bottle (picked up in Michigan for me by artusory). Thanks, Ryan! Pours a bright, deep maroon color; off-white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Boozy dried fruits and fruit leather in the aroma; plenty of stickiness and spice. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: intensely dense and viscous dried fruit and boozy dark fruit / licorice; not a huge spice presence, at least not in relation to the dried fruitiness; just an immensely sweet, viscous beer without being too cloying. Lengthy, sweet and mildly spiced finish. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 4, 2007 Poured from a bomber. Semi-clear and still body of browned orange. Aroma is very hot, first of cayenne and vinegar, then a whiskey of insubstantial body. Oranges, honey, and dandelions provide some unintimidating accent. Burnt toffee and wet wood define the beginning stages of taste. Crisp spices, quite vague, bite on the first smack. Plenty warm, and with the temperature increase the spices get dark and earthy - cardamom and anise. Sesame seed drys out the finish. Smooth and rich palate with a salutary reserved prickle of carbonation. A soft spirit-like dispostion; fitting. A bit young, maybe, but the cigar did it a lot of good. Thanks for sharing, Ken! sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 22, 2007 Tasted 9/10/07. 22oz bomber. Filtered with a deep amber hue. Beige ring of head. Piney and sweet. Citrus astringency. Slight Pine Sol nose. Candy sugar and dried dark fruit. Cinnamon aromas. Big but not necessarily wonderful. Super full bodied with a big burn. Almost a nutmeg spice flavor. Nuances of Belgian candy sugar yeastiness. Burnt sugar and mild citrus. Warming brew. Intense beer. Cocoa and caramel mixed with odd spices. Might be better after a bit of mellowing. I’d give this Deca a few years under the belt. egajdzis (3598), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 17, 2007 Poured a purple brown color with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of dried fruits, caramel, molasses, with light spice, bready malts, candy sugar, and a bit of citrus hops. Taste of elderberries, plums, raisins, cherries, some tart citrus, light smoke, thick molasses, caramel malts, and faint spices. Light alcohol noticed, but Founders really knows how to brew a big beer like DFH, that is for sure!
