apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA Sep 16, 2007 A very pleasant earthiness, like beets, abounds in this beer, as well as a nice grassiness/herbal quality. I like it. I’m also quite surprised at the high alcohol content! It’s detectable in the aroma, but not so much in the flavor. there is no characteristic alcohol burn typical of beers of this caliber. Its quite sticky and sweet with cane sugar notalush (2628), Denver, Colorado, USA Sep 16, 2007 Hazy burgundy with a purple hue - a vigorous pour fails to kick up a head, just a small ring of lace - barleywine-like aroma, with notes of plum, brown sugar, figs, port wine, wintery spices, alcohol and a sweet, booze character - slick mouthfeel, with low carbonation - alcohol heat is apparent from the get-go, and lasts all the way through the finish - dried cherries, raisins and figs - syrupy sweetness is slightly cut by a light tartness, but the sweetness compliments the alcohol warmth, fruit, and spicy character, creating a kind of spiced rum flavor - doughy, christmas pastry flavor and some herbal character develop late - complex and tasty, but a little too sticky. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA Sep 13, 2007 Dark Brown with a Luminescent Dark Red Glow. No Head. Heavy Syrupy Malt, Dark Bready Fruit, Spice, Herbal Hops, Toasted Aroma. Heavy Bodied, Sweet Syrupy and Dry Hopped Thick Mouthfeel. Warming Immediately Present and Effective. Still Quite Smooth Given that it’s 13%. Caramel, Syrupy Barley, Dark Breads, Dates/Figs, Light Spices and Subtle Fruit. Very Sweet, Syrupy and Doughy with Nice Spiced and Hopped Finish Making for a Wonderfully Balanced Big Brew. Outstanding Thick and Gooey Winter Warmer. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Sep 5, 2007 Bottle received via trade with john adam. Pours hazy brown with a small, fizzy, light brown head, diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toast), average hops (flowers), average yeast (dough) with notes of date, apple and brown sugar. Full bodied, oily texture, average carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Sep 2, 2007 22 oz bottle: Pours dark amber with a small head. Strong spicy aroma. While the smell has some alcohol, the taste really does not. Smell and taste of spices that I can not put my finger on - maybe cinnamon. Really drinkable. 22ozs went down easy. Very good beer. ehhdayton (1113), USA Aug 31, 2007 Pours a dark copperish amber with a small short lasting light tan head. Deep, rich malty aroma with toffee, caramel, bread, and biscuit with a touch of spices. Flavor had a complex maltiness with the flavor of hops adding a nice balance. As the beer warms Decca acquires a sherry like quality. Full bodied and complex make for a pleasent brew. bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Aug 29, 2007 Draft at the brewery: Pours a deep burgundy color with a shimmering white, fog-like head that just drifted around the halo. Big mixed berry, apple, light malt, candied sugar nose on this BAMF. The taste of this was phenomenal. Very silky, vinous taste with some lovely maltiness, caramel, and a floral hop finish. Alcohol was very well hidden and I believe Founders has made their finest brew in Deca. Simply amazing. michael-pollack (2605), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 28, 2007 22oz. Bottle: Lightly sweet, lightly bitter aroma. Smells of bittering hops, alcohol, toffee, and brown sugar. Poured dark orange/brown in color with a small, fizzy, beige head that diminished quickly. Pretty much no lacing. Very hazy. Pretty much opaque. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of malts, caramel, hops, alcohol, and a little cough syrup. Medium to full body. Thick, syrupy texture. Soft carbonation. Slightly bitter, malty finish. Overall, good, but I was nuts to pay $25 for this. 13% ABV is very well hidden. No alcohol burn.
