MatSciGuy (627), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Jul 22, 2009 [Bottle] Pours clear copper with almost no head. Looks really sticky pouring from the bottle. Aroma is slightly metallic malt, lots of citrus and pine from the hops, and plenty of caramel malt sweetness to back all the hops. Flavor is definitely more balanced towards the hop end of the spectrum, but not way out of balance. Bracing, somewhat harsh bitterness comes through mostly on the end. Malty sweetness strikes the palate first, and then the beer just cascades into spicy and bitter hops. This is up there, but not quite as abrasive as, Hopsickle. This beer does not suggest the 12% that the bottle claims. Rynoplasty (500), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jul 21, 2009 Pours hazy amber brown with a small cream colored head. Aroma is big citrusy grapefruit hops, with a nice slightly floral presence too as well as a slight hint of mango. Flavor is big citrusy grapefruit as well, with a little bit of pine and floral notes with just a hint of sweetness. Very good. ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Jul 21, 2009 12oz bottle from grape & gourmet. pours a "devilish" copper, red with a thin white head and drippy lacing. aroma is fantastic with bold, uniquely spicy citrus hop notes of grapefruit and orange zest, big notes of pine resin, a hint of pineapple and peach, sweet toffee malts, and a bit of booze. flavor is excellent as well with a bitter assault of citrus, pine, and spicy floral hops up front with a great balance of sweet caramel malts, honey, and a touch of berry. palate is medium bodied and dangerously smooth with the 12% offering just a slight hit of warmth within the long, dry, bitter hop finish. overall, this is an excellent, albeit expensive, and well balanced, over the top brew. Enjoyit (1695), Vadum, Denmark Jul 19, 2009 Unclear amber of color with an orange head. An aroma of warm oranges, malty, honey and grapefruits. A flavor of grapefruits, hops, malty, bitter and dry. ruskiimperial (51), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 15, 2009 Disclaimer: I happen to thoroughly enjoy beer that is incredibly hoppy and bitter, even if it ruins your palate for the rest of the night.
That being said, this beer when opened hot has a sweet smell but a strong piney resin-like taste. This definitely has high alfa acids. Having had this when it has been aged for 1+ years I will say that this becomes more of a barleywine as the hop profile recedes and the sweet malts come through that you only pick up on the nose when its hot. A very excellent beer that can truly call itself a ’triple ipa’ if there is such a thing. minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 14, 2009 Updated: Jul 27, 2009Deep caramel orange/red color, thin but creamy khaki head. Very big hop aroma - pine, grapefruit, pineapple, resins. Very sweet and malty flavor on a backdrop of piney hops. Reminds me of my first experience with 90 minute; actually has more similarities with Burton Baton. Rusty copper/caramel (crystal malty) flavor brings to mind Arrogant Bastard and Curmudgeon. Full bodied; creamy texture. Some heat in the finish. Overall, very nicely done, very malt-forward "ipa". Huge, hoppy, malty, hot. zizzybalubba (335), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA Jul 14, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet. Dark orange/brown pour with a 1/4 inch thick off-white head. Big piney hop aroma but also surprisingly sweet smelling. While good, and certainly hoppy, this one does have a big malt presence. This ain’t no West Coast IIPA that’s for sure. I can’t even necessarily say that it is balanced because it is no where near as smooth as something like Hercules. It’s just big and hoppy (which I like a lot) and big and sweet (which is fine but I don’t like as much). There is some alcohol burn with this but overall the 12% is hidden well. It’s a great IIPA but especially for the price you can do better. CelticBrew (676), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2009 12 oz bottle compliments of the most excellent DrBayern (much mahalo Matt). Pours a clear rich dark copperish red with a small bubbled relatively thin cream colored head. The nose is pure hop heaven pungently stretched over a sweet round caramel backbone. This hop aromas run the gamut from pine to citrus to flowers. Notable, but not overwhelming alcohol. Exploding with fresh floral hops, grapefruit, orange peel, butterscotch and crystal malts. I could literally smell this stuff from 3 feet away. The first sip is a straight knock to the dome! Wow, what an insanely bitter beer, but I like it! Crammed with hoppy goodness. Nutty and earthy crystal malt tones subdue the intense ABV, so it finishes quite nicely, with the IBU’s pounding your palate for minutes afterward. I am impressed at how such a monster can be balanced. An intense beer in every aspect, a beer to be cherished and betrothed.....
