JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Oct 26, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a deep amber, almost brown with no head. Aroma is tons of hop with a little sweetness. Flavor is some malt, huge hop and some alcohol. Seemed a bit under-carbonated, but pretty good overall. dchmela (1406), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 25, 2008 Thanks to Eithbubes for the bottle. Pours a thick light amber with almost no head and a yeasty end to the bottle. Big malty aroma, lots of faded hops and hints of toffee. Taste is big and malty with lots of hops, a bit faded, but nice. Lots of toffee and sneaky strong. Good beer, tasty. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Oct 24, 2008 bottle. first of all, this is an American Barleywine - not a IIPA. for being over 200 IBUs, it doesn’t drink that way... there are loads of hops, don’t get me wrong, but it isn’t in your face as much as say Hopsickle or even Ruination. There is an incredible balance between the malts and hops that creates such an insanely drinkable 13% American BW. It pours a deep red with little head... nice full body on top with thinner sides, tilting away from the hops. Great level of citrus hops and caramel malts on the nose.... citrus hops and a spicy character on the tip, while the finish is quite massive in hops and alcohol. There is almost a bit of a burn at the far back. Thick bitter finish that sticks with you. This beer seems to dominate the top of the tongue and the back of the throat.... overall, I was very pleased with this, but was surprised how well balanced it really is... GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 15, 2008 Pours dark clear copper with a very small beige head that dissipates quickly to a ring leaving bits of lacing. The aroma leans toward a barleywine with the heavy caramel malts and dark fruits. there are some citrus hops in the nose as well. In the taste, there is a more prevalent citrus hop kick up front before the malts and sweetness take over in the middle and leaves a sticky sweet finish with a hint of bitterness. The mouthfeel is sticky and medium bodied with little carbonation. This is a DIPA that borders on a barleywine with a slightly abrasive feel that keeps it from being great for me and holds down the drinkability a bit. JFURYCAT (782), East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2008 Bottle at Cooper’s Scranton PA. What a delicious malt bomb with some overdone hop infusion to boot! I admit, the smaller treasures of this beer may be hidden underneath this blast so the complexities get overshadowed somewhat. The dryness and texture is good but the hops lose character. The pirate restaurant delivered once again. Schultsc (478), Henderson, Nevada, USA Oct 13, 2008 Updated: Oct 18, 2008Thanks cpferris for the trade. Hazy dark red-amber with a thin, very fine medium tan head. The aroma is for all intensive purposes is that of a barleywine: dark caramel malt, fruity alcohol sweetness, spicy hops, and thick, resinous caramelized citrus hops. The flavor is again dripping with thick, sustained bitter resin and dark citrus hops with some more spice that again very much leaves the impression of an American barleywine. The body is shockingly dry for how malty this beer comes across. The 13% alcohol is amazingly well integrated. This one is huge and unwieldy but maintains its balance and poise nonetheless--true to its namesake. That being said, however, read "triple IPA" as "barleywine." rustychiles (997), Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 27, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Secret Santa Ty5592.
Pours a beautiful hazy orange with a soapy off white head. Aroma of tons of hops, malt, and some earthy notes. Flavor is huge malty sweetness and insanely well balanced hop bitterness. Goes down the hatch with a nice Slick oilymouthfeel. I somehow think the hops have faded since this was released a while back because this is a lot maltier and less hoppier than I thought it would be. Regardless even with a little age on this this is one hell of a brew. Definitely gonna do a trade next time this brewed so I can try it fresh. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA Sep 15, 2008 Amber to red in color with a light beige colored head. Smell is pine, citrus, caramel, and sweet. Taste is a nice bitterness with the pine and citrus coming from the hops, but it blends and balances well with the malts. Alcohol is well balanced in the to the brew as well. Medium to full body. Good beer.
