Surly (19), Michigan, USA Apr 17, 2008 4 pack bottle purchased at Whole Foods. Pours a beautiful dark red. Visually I cannot think of a better looking beer. Initially had more carbonation than I expected for such a dark red beer. medium head, about a quarter inch that disappates after a few minutes. Light lacing. Smells of fresh citrus, hops and carmel, maybe even some chocolate. Very full mouth feel, smooth and full at first but then an explosion of bitterness and hops that lingers until your next sip, absolutely delicious with a long long finish. BREWMUSKCLES (1062), New Jersey, USA Apr 16, 2008 aroma is magnificent...hops pure floral and grapefruit hops. clean beautiful brown and murky with light brown head. quite a bitch boys but not at all evil. take her on and tame her yourself. a finis you will not forget. jackson220 (136), new lenox, Illinois, USA Apr 16, 2008 On Tap. A beautiful amber color with a small off white creamy head.Very nice lacing. Aromas of dark and citrus fruits. Hops galore with a nice malty finish. Smooth and dry mouth feel. Great IPA. 13% abv, another fantastic beer from Founders. Ok I will say it... Danced with the Devil. kkearn (994), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 15, 2008 bottle. Reddish hue with a moderate sized off-white head. Aroma is initially big, syrupy malt but is quickly joined by even bigger citric hops. Flavor opens with sweet caramel malt but is then overpowered by hops; piney at first, the grapefruity. Finish is all bitter, with hop resin coating the palate for a long time. It’s intended to be a hop bomb and accomplishes its mission. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 15, 2008 In bottle at Jerry’s. Caramel colored, visibly thick, with good, creamy tan head / Complex, candied nose of caramel and orange peel with big body easily masking the big alcohol / Full-bodied, with rich, sweet caramel malts, a touch cloying, with big, chewy, biting hops / Flavors of caramel and figs with undertones of orange peel / Very good, but massive malt body moves it out of the double ipa realm for me. Agree with the apt comparison to Dogfish 120, below. mkobes (2103), paramus, New Jersey, USA Apr 13, 2008 On tap at D Room. Dark copper in color with a little white head. Hoppy sweet malty aroma. Caramel citrusy notes. Fruity citrusy malty flavor. Apricot notes. Strong tasting. Finish is bitter. Full bodied. Wow. Great beer. DrHomolka (725), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 8, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a dark red with a small off-white head. I am scared of this beer. Ever since I tried DFH 120 min again I’ve had a deep dislike for sweet, overly high ABV ipas. I just got the feeling this could fall into the same category. Aroma is not bad. Smells like a barley wine. Caramel, huge malt sweetness, and a significant amount of hops, though not enough to make this smell like anything other than a hop forward American style barley wine. Definitely has too much malt character for an double or triple ipa. The taste is malty, strong, bitter though surprisingly smooth. I wouldn’t call this very drinkable but it is much more so than I thought it would be. Again, tastes like a barley wine. The alcohol and bitterness are present but neither are off putting. This isn’t exactly a beer I’d run out to buy again but it’s much better than I thought it would be. GriffinAvenue (395), Winchester, Massachusetts, USA Apr 5, 2008 Draft. Cherry-brown coloring with limited head. Hoppy, with sweet fragrant aroma. Lightly fruity. High alcohol warmness assaults the top of the mouth. Tangy, apricot-like notes. Packs a wallop.
