Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Mar 2, 2008 Thank you Daniel/TheCheeseMan for this hoppy treat!! It’s incredibly beautiful, slightly hazy, dark orange/red/copper with a dense, creamy head. The aroma has loads of hops with notes of orange peel, citrus, mango, overripe pineapple and caramel. The mouthfeel is nice and thick! The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of caramel, loads of citrus (mostly the sweet types), spruce, papaya and a delicious and very nicely balanced bitterness, that IMO isn’t extreme in any way. It’s one of the really great IPA’s - very nice indeed! Driftwood6 (214), USA Mar 2, 2008 On tap at Map Room, Chicago. Obviously very hoppy, but not overly complex. Taste is similar to Two Brothers Hop Juice. Does not have the fruitiness of Bell’s Hopslam or the fresh grassiness of 3F Dreadnaught. Very good, but I liked Hopslam and Dreadnaught a little more based on the flavor. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Feb 29, 2008 SQNfan...this is a WOW, my friend. Thank you for the sampling!!! Incredible burnt orange body and amazing pungent citris/pine/caramel aroma that wakes you up after a long day at work. Flavor truly does dance on the palate with indicative, yet aggressively added tang. Also, there was a lingering impression of strawberries that helped differentiate this from other IPA’s I’ve tasted. Everything about this beer was top-notch...and makes me reconsider who my favorite brewer is (AleSmith, Bell’s, or Founder’s). Strykzone (1458), Wood River, Illinois, USA Feb 24, 2008 This is an incredible beer and is perfectly balanced. This is the second Founders product I have enjoyed in a week (after the Breakfast Stout) and both have been "Wows". Devil Dancer was everything one would hope for in a Double IPA, and this from someone who is not a fan of big hopped beers. agl108 (503), Manayunk, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 23, 2008 12 oz. bottle at Flat Rock Saloon. Poured deep, clear red with minimal head. Only the slightest bit of lacing. Appeared grossly undercarbonated. Nose was very floral. Thick, malty body with extreme hop bite. Tastes like biting into a dry pine tree. Lots of warming alcohol throught the course of the beer. Difficult to drink, but impressive with the limits that this beer tests (200+ IBUs??). matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Feb 20, 2008 12 oz bottle from a trade with degarth. pours a headless deep red. aromas are hugely hoppy. so hoppy my nose hairs were burning. flavours are big and complex hops but what makes this one great is the malt structure holds through to the finish. this balances out the abundance of hops. no trace of the 13% abv. very very good. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Feb 15, 2008 Updated: Jul 16, 2009I’m actually rating this from memory from a few months ago (and it was the last of a long night of tasting), but it was a memorable beer. Thick, sweet, spicy, hoppy... but not overpoweringly hoppy. Candied pineapple was a dominant taste for me. Dangerously drinkable for a 12% beer. RE-RATE: Fresh bottle from Sam’s. Pours deep clear reddish amber with one-finger light yellow head that turns into foamy bubbles. This was an early rate for me, and I thought I might kick it down a few notches from my earlier rating. Not so much, really. This is such a unique beer to me... seems to transcend the DIPA thing into new territory (perhaps, hence the "triple IPA" label). The sweet malts are not overpowering (a la Dogfish Head); instead, they nicely balance the bitter hops. Taste still reminds me of candied pineapple and bitter hops in a good way. What a great beer. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Feb 9, 2008 2-3-08 bottle shared at tasting (1 year aged)
Dark brown caramel colored with short beige head. Sweet caramel hoppy nose that is almost similar to Strawberry Twislers (as someone pointed out). Sweet honey alcohol flavor. I get malt, caramel and honey in the flavor. Palte is pretty good too - not too watery or thin. Overall, not horrible.
