Founders Devil Dancer Triple IPA

bottle from hopdog. viscous pour. hazy reddish brown with a cream beige head. sticky lacing all the way down the glass. super sweet malty aroma along with red apples, toffee and citric hops. flavor is a sweet combination of the aroma mixed with some chocolate, vanilla, orange and alcohol. it finishes surprisingly dry and piney. sweet lingering aftertaste of alcohol and chocolate. full bodied with a syrupy sticky mouth feel. 7/3/7/4/15/3.6

still, awfully sweet though it is in great balance. the bitter dry finish really helps it out. a bit confused?7/4/7/4/15/3.7

Bottle obtained from HogTownHarry. Thickish reddish-copper pour with a wispy head. Big aroma of piney hops with background notes of citrus, caramel, raisins, and a hint of chocolate. Very full body. Flavour is HUGE, but surprisingly balanced - lots of hops, but lots of malt as well. Finish is long and warm, but not overly alcoholic, especially given the 13%. Fantastic stuff.

Unsurprisingly hoppy aroma: Citrus (especially lemon), apricot, hint of pine. Also surprisingly malty aroma: port, cookie dough, fruitcake, dark chocolate, brownies, red apple, pear. Alcohol smell evident. Aroma like that of a hoppy barley wine. Pours a clear copper with a pale gold hue and a small amount of thin, light tan head. Produces moderate amount of lacing. Remarkably and aggressively dry, bitter, hoppy taste from the moment it hits the tongue to the finish. Lemon, orange, and tangerine flavors that seem to derive from the hops. Sweet, plum-like , floral malt background. Peanut butter cookie, brown sugar, and pear flavors. Alcohol makes its presence felt. Make no mistake: The hops dominate the taste, but I actually think the beer is excessively malty. I don’t need my hop bombs to be balanced. Extremely long, dry finish and aftertaste. Also an unexpected roasted malt bitter aftertaste. Full body. Sharp and lively in the palate. I purchased this beer over two months ago, and it remains a hop monster. I would call it a hop head’s dream, but it is too malty for that. Really more of a hopped through the roof barley wine than a typical double IPA.

Quite possibly my favorite IIPA/DIPA although without having had Bells Hopslam it is not conclusive. I have had 120 IBUs ( one which was very bitter, and another that was balanced by what can only be described as insane amounts of malt) and I can say that this is well beyond that. Great coloring..definitely the best of any IPA I have poured. Very citrusy aroma. Malty in the front of the palate (it has to be considering the amount of hops)...but after that initial taste, BAM....the hops kicks in big time. A bitter grapefruit would be accurate to start...and then its just bitter hops. The alcohol is well-hidden, and if you can get past the bitterness....this is a fantastic beer.

Giving this one a re taste from a 12 oz bottle. Thanks dra19. Pours a murky thick orange amber with little to no head. The aroma is rich , thick, sweet, malty, caramel, a little like a BW, hides the hops, and alcohol. The flavor is incredibly intense, thick hops, resinous, waxy, dry, mild alcohol, smooth, citrus, some pine, spicy hops, very easy to drink. Malt presence is obvious, caramel, a bit barley wineish. Soothing. Nice smooth mouthfeel with a lasting warmth and pleasant citrusy aftertaste.

Hazy copper pour, fluffy white head and thick drippy lace. Rich malty aroma with a twist of hops. In your face hoppy with big malty backbone. Not overly bitter just well balanced. No big surprise this beer is way better fresh. It becomes really cloying with some age on it

Bottle from pantanap - thanks, Kan! Fine looking ruby pour with almost no head. The aroma is malty to some extent, but of course - at apparently over 200 IBUs (hmmmm) - it’s mostly a hop-roundhouse to the face. Part of me thinks these triple IPAs just don’t work, as they’re amped up to the point where they’re astringent. But on the other hand, the sizzling pucker in the middle balanced by malts at the back is a bit impressive. Maybe I should’ve been more patient and aged this a full year. Good stuff anyways.

Lucky to get a four of this in trade. Super flavorful with lots of hops. Aroma strong of alcohol and hops with some malt sweetness. Very strong and delicious taste. Dangerous as it doesn’t taste as storng as it is. Complexity of woodiness, food, bitter and sweet. Very Nice. Had on draft @ Sunset and bottles in trade. Mostly the same experience.
