npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA Jun 4, 2007 Hazy red, with a very solid off-white head. Hoppy nose, with a good dose of orange and solid piney notes, some caramel and honey. Flavor is nicely rounded, with a profound toffee sweetness that gives way to a nice almondine bitterness. Plenty of citrus and even a touch of chocolate round things out. Excellent creamy mouthfeel. masonjer (555), Holt, Michigan, USA Jun 4, 2007 Updated: Aug 5, 2008Had this on tap at Founders. Smells quite sweet, almost like sweettarts, as well as citrus and some pine. Taste is quite different than the smell, loads of hops, still a good amount of sweetness and malt character. Doesn’t hit you with a big kick at the end, rather if fades off and the hop flavor just kinds of sticks to your tongue. Enjoyed it. MrBunn (1518), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 3, 2007 Rating #400... bottle. Alright, so I’m fairly excited for this one, Founders seems incapable of missing, so we’ll see what their Triple IPA is like. Pour is a reddish brown color with a very minimal head. As I’m pouring, I am almost overwhelmed with the hops aroma... pineapple and grapefruit are the dominant hops scents, but there are other caramel malt promises that are lurking in the background. I’m not picking up any sniffs of the 13% ABV... First thoughts are that it is fairly syrupy and thick... almost a sugary stickiness. That malty sweetness gives way to a hops blast of bitterness that finishes out the beer. I’m not sure that this is anywhere near one of my favorite IPA’s... it is simply a little over the top and unidimensional... It is certainly a really nice Imp. IPA, but the supremely bitter finish with an alcoholic astringency leave me a little disappointed. Still, really nice... just expected a little more. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 3, 2007 The First of the Dan Journal. Tasted 4/11/2006. Murky with a caramel hue. Spotty off-white head. Syrupy with port and caramel in the nose. Sugary bitter and long. Initially sweet with caramel notes. Then a citrus bomb, followed by a dry and sticky piney hop finish. Fantastic! chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Jun 2, 2007 Full bodied yet a bit oily with floral aroma and fruity hoppy flavor and with out excessive sweetness or malt. Pine, orange, grapefruit. JLAudio (282), Crestwood, Illinois, USA Jun 2, 2007 Updated: Jun 20, 2007Pours a deep copper color with nice sized head and good lacing. Beer smells quite strong, full of hops and malt. Taste is not bad, considering 13% ABV, and leaves a nice film in your mouth full of bitterness. Actually, not too bitter! Just the alcohol taste is bad, otherwise would be one of the best Imperials. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Jun 2, 2007 Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a very deep golden/amber with a heavy haze. There is almost no head to speak of. Aromas of orange and sweet toffee. The smell is delicious. Flavors consist of toffee, grapefruit, and caramel. The alohol shows up with a nice little sting on the tip of your tounge, finishing off with a lasting bitterness. Mouthfeel is very oily. Very light carbonation. This is definately a full-bodied beer. I love IIPA’s, and this one for me ranks near the best I have had. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA May 31, 2007 A glowing amber resin pour, mostly clear. Hair spray stricken orange and honey aromas with the unmistakable urinal discoloration. Almost a vodka taste beside toffee malts and a Himalayan sprucy bitterness. Little for complexity amidst these extremes. Alcohol rears its gargoyle head on the palate with chemical strength. Very long finish, a sultry bourbon coating. Retains a faint resemblance of balance however. A more graceful step into the dark.
