jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA May 30, 2007 Updated: Jun 22, 2007Re-Rate. First time I had this I was a little toasted after already having a 120min IPA. I have to say, I don’t know what 200 Ibus is like, but this is certainly more than 100 ibus. The first time I didn’t really notice this, so maybe its just the particular pack I got this time.
Pours a gorgeous ruby red, one of the most deliciously colored beers i’ve seen. Aroma is sweet and tart, citrus, very mouthwatering. The palate is sticky, body is medium but nice. Flavor starts out with heavy malts combined with deep resinous/piney hops. Its very very heavy to start, you can feel it in the stickyness right when you put it in your mouth. The maltyness anchors the hops nicely for the first 3/4 of the beer, but then it subsides into a VERY bitter grapefruit like aftertaste. My only complaint on this beer is that the extreme bitterness stands alone at the end, which makes it slightly difficult to keep drinking. Alcohol is nicely hidden. I love the hops, especially double ipas, and this is one seriously POWERFUL beer, but I have a hard time appreciating the good points when the ending is so bitter. mbrandon2w (109), Worcester, Massachusetts, USA May 30, 2007 it’s more like a hoppy barleywine at this point than an ipa. it was a great beer, but triple ipa seems more like a BS marketing thing than a real style. I liked it, but it’s definitely more of a barleywine. that said, the fact that it was labeled a triple ipa made me buy it, so i guess marketing works. Nephilium (541), Ohio, USA May 30, 2007 Retrieved for me by a coworker after a grueling trip to Michigan. This pours an opaque reddish-orange color with a thin head. The aroma was not quite as potent as I expected, slight sweet aroma that fades to a slight aroma of pine and citrus. The flavor on the other hand, starts off with a slight taste of caramel, then goes off into the wonderful land of bitterness, leaving an oily film in the mouth from the hops. Alcohol is only noticeable in a slight burn in the back of the throat. Overall, a bit expensive for my tastes, but a very tasty beer. krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA May 30, 2007 bottle. color is deep red-orange. much darker than any ipa i’ve ever seen.looks more like red ale. head is minimal with a cream color. nose is citric hops with grapefruit and muscat notes. smells like fortified wine which i guess makes it vinous. initially i taste the alcohol not in a bad way but you can tell is there even though otherwise it remains well hidden. the hops are really big, brash and piney with a lot of malt to balance. it’s surprisingly well balanced at that. palate is thick and sticky. finish is long with stingy pine needle hops and rich malts staying with you for a long time. johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA May 30, 2007 Poured an amber color with a fluffy white head. A ton of hops in the smell. Beautiful. Taste was much of the same. Extremely bitter. Good brew. madscotsman (147), Fairview Heights, Illinois, USA May 28, 2007 Wow! Poured a nice amber color with a nice head. Had a hoppy aroma as you would expect. When it hits your palate you can taste the hops and a little malt. Very low carbonation. Had great flavor if you’re a hop head. Nice beer for this category. Flyer (118), Hartland, Wisconsin, USA May 27, 2007 There’s so much going on with this massive beer I almost don’t know where to start. The pour is deep, murky orange-brown, with a billowy head. Monster hop nose. First taste is a creamy, caramel maltiness, immediately followed by a cascade of hoppiness, with notes of pine, orange, grapefruit, maybe even a little ginger (?). Resiny, billowing mouthfeel. It also has some barleywine-type qualities. Aftertaste is more of the delicious, complex hop whallop. The alcohol is notable, but you’d never guess it’s 13%. Complex and intense, an absolutely amazing beer. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA May 26, 2007 12oz. Bottle

Devil Dancer is one hell of a hop bomb. As soon as the bottle is opened the intense hoppiness makes your nose hairs stand on end. Pours a deep mahogany with a slight chill haze. A white one finger head formed on the pour and faded to a solid cap with thick head along the edges. Leaves sheet lacing after each sip that slowly falls back into the body but leaves thick drink history lines.
This beer is so incredibly hoppy it actually clears your sinuses. There is a strong caramel maltiness. Strong for other beers but it doesn’t hold a candle to the hops in this monster. This beer just drips with resinous hops. There’s also that aspirin quality from the tremendous amount of hops added. Some pine needles as well.
Starts with the big caramel maltiness but it’s quickly beat aside by the huge hoppiness. There is a musty woodiness that shows up just before the hops take over. Resinous hops drip from my tongue. Pine needles and some unsweetened grapefruit show up toward the end of the show. That aspirin bitterness comes by on the swallow and the hoppy bitterness just lingers and lingers.
Viscous and lush mouthfeel. The carbonation is on the low end of the spectrum. As soon as this beer hits your lips and tongue they go completely numb. It’s like the first DIPA I ever expierenced but it happens everytime I drink this beer. A beating that I can’t get enough of.
I know this beer is huge. I know my mouth is completely numb after the first sip. I know the alcohol is way too much to drink more than one but I can’t get enough of this stuff. I could drink it till I can’t drink anymore.
One of my favorite DIPAs for the simple fact that I love to take a beating every now and again. This will certainly do that to the tastebuds. Another great beer from Founders. Everything they make is great.
