Founders most complex, most innovative, most feared and yet most revered ale produced. Massive in complexity the huge malt character balances the insane amount of alpha’s used to create this monster. More IBU’s than any brewery has documented, more than you would believe and dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties. Dangerously drinkable and deliciously evil. We dare you to dance with the Devil. 112 IBUs

A beautiful deep reddish amber pours from the glass and looks heavy as the head forms. A thick frothy finger thick head is off beige and has thick bubbles. Really great lacing and some slight alcoholic legs. Really thick caramel and malt notes are the first on the nose and they’re followed quickly by strong booze and hop notes. Marijuana, citrus, and grassy notes are all present. The malt here is really the strongest stand out on the nose. Surprising for a Triple IPA. Lots and lots of roasty caramel and malt on top. Followed closely by burning hops that take a few sips to adjust to. A boozy character in the center takes a moment to shine but really helps the entire beer showcase the hops. Citrus is the strongest hop character along with a slight piney flavor. Thick and heavy in the mouth carried well by a decent amount of carbonation. Great overall. Incredibly thick, rich and flavorful. Although the caramel and malt slightly steal the show. This shouldn’t be considered an IPA but something more akin to a barleywine. A bit pricey but something I look forward to trying year after year.

Enjoyed straight from the bottle after some nice singletrack with friends at the lake. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle.Dark red pour with a slight, quickly dissipating pink head. Sweet and boozy with fruity undertones. The booziness overpowers the hops. A great sipping beer, but not a lot of hop-forward bitterness for a triple IPA

Bottle pours a cloudy dark red with a small white head. Aroma was alcohol, caramel, sugar, vanilla, floral, and some citrus. Taste was more like a barleywine than any IPA I’ve ever had. Sweet and boozy with lots of caramel, toffee, sugar, and faint hints of flowers and grapefruit. With 112 IBU I was thinking it would be more bitter, but it had so much sweet notes that it pretty much canceled it out. Ok beer, but not worth the price honestly.

Draft at Founders. Pours a dark ruby red. Aroma and taste are fruity and caramel.

12 ounce bottle purchased at HyVee in Cedar Rapids, Iowa while on a trip to visit the inlaws (a hefty $5.49). Pours a dark reddish-amber hue with one finger of off-white foam. AROMA has noticeable boozy alcohol throughout as well as notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, perfumy floral hops, citrus, wet pine, and resiny hops. FLAVOR has significant barleywine-type elements with hoppy notes of sticky pine sap and sticky heavy grapefruit, but also a good balancing presence of caramel and bready malts...and some booze. Finishes slightly more sweet than bitter. All elements improve as the beer warms up (and the booziness is somewhat lessened as well). Good, but still a far cry from Pliny the Younger. (1437, 884)

Pours cloudy chestnut, slight of white head, slight thin lacing. Aroma caramel, toffee, bready malt, burnt sugar dominate, slight earthy, piney hops, alcohol present. Taste slight bitter, bready, toffee, slight burnt sugar, earthy hops, big alcohol throughout. Mouthfeel full body, lower carbonation, alcohol astringency and warming, balanced finish. Overall fantastic barley wine, cannot rate as ipa, not a lot of hop Aroma or flavor, it is definetly there to cut through the huge malt bill though.

The aroma is malty with a slight hint of hops - some caramel and a slight citrus. Pours a nice amber with a light brown head, fully diminishing, good lacing. The taste is sour with a little bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation soft and the finish bitter. Overall OK, had in the past and thought better of it.

Pours deep brown amber with low off-white head. Aroma of caramel and toffee, malts, resin, hints of grapefruit but otherwise very little fruit aroma. Taste is a different story. Very hop forward and resin bitter followed by sweet caramel then a looong lingering bitter finish. Slightly boozy, you can tell it’s high ABV. Body is medium to rich, smooth and warming with soft carbonation.

Bottle 2014. Pours deep cherry red with no head besides a ring of bubbles. The aroma is intense spiced pine and candied sugar. The taste adds sweet malt with a bitter finish. This is a very big, rich triple ipa but much smoother and less bitter than last year. Wow! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
