POurs dark amber with tan head.
Aroma is loaded with caramel and light traces of hops.
Taste, thick mouthfeel, superior malty presence all to the way to the finish, adding for some sugary notes. Light hops, very smooth and grainy. This is 13% and really didi not feel like it. beerbill (1989), Laurel, New York, USA

Pours a cloudy dark amber with some reddish highlights when held against light. Very thin, uneven off-white head that quickly vanished. Very pleasant aroma of sweet malt, brandy, and some bright notes of citrus, particularly orange. The flavor is sweet malt up front followed by some very resinous hops. Very luxurious, almost sticky (in a good way) mouthfeel. Rich and full bodied. A bit of brandy in the aftertaste. I enjoyed this one very much in my Southampton snifter this one is a sipper for sure. mar (1981), Dallas, Texas, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 15, 2008 Amber to red in color with a light beige colored head. Smell is pine, citrus, caramel, and sweet. Taste is a nice bitterness with the pine and citrus coming from the hops, but it blends and balances well with the malts. Alcohol is well balanced in the to the brew as well. Medium to full body. Good beer. MIBRomeo (1966), Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 18, 2005 a beatiful cloudy copper color w/ a nice off white thick small bubbled head that laces very well. Smells of a sweet carmel malt, plums, pears and a citrus hop and a hint of syrupiness. Palate is highly carbonated full bodied coats well and nicely creamy. Flavor is first a big dry hop very complex and I can’t pick out a specific kind but more grassy than others then a nice sweet malt backbone and hints of a light fruity chunk of maybe overripe plums. Overall a damn good beer. I could drink a lot of this. hophead75 (1964), Boonton, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 1, 2007 12 oz bottle from Julios. Amber in color/dark orange with a medium off white head. Aroma is alot of caramel and citrus hops, with some pine. Taste is very big as I expected: tons of malt, and a good amount of citrus and pine hops. Bittering is moderate. Body is very syrupy, which makes sense as this is a 13 % IPA- IMO this is an american barleywine and not an IPA. Alchohol is pretty well hidden.

Somehow, the balance of this brew has dissapeared. Some say it never had balance, but I remember my first sample being out of this world balanced for 13% This thing is a alcohol monster! Lots of hops, pine, resin and woody alcohol underneath. I dont think Its as good as it once was, so im lowering the score a bit from 4.3 to 4.1
12oz bottle-again, huge props to jtw for this fine IIPA. pours a nice deep orange hue with a nice medium carbonation body and a nice eggshell head. great lacing from the start. sugary citric, cantelope, mango and grapefruit. I love the aroma. The hop profile of founders beers are great. flavors of very persistent citric hop to start with a good carmel malt backbone. finishes dry and piney. This beer is sweet, but never cloying like DFH 120. Awesome balance for a 13% beer. Long grapefruit finish. very tasty! This has the body of a barleywine but the flavors of a IIPA. 200ibu’s? i dont think its that high-maybe 140-150. I think this beer rocks! if you love IIPA’s and hugely hoppy beers, check this one out! scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 11, 2005 Hazy deep mahogany, thick creamy off-white head. An intense and rich nose of juicy pineapple, caramelized grapefruit, earth, and pine, with underlying toasted coconut notes sprinkled throughout. Just amazing aromas as it warmed to room temp. Flavor was just as intense with a HUGE hop bitterness up front, and massive amounts of sweet caramel malt fighting for balance. It comes damn near close too. Full bodied (understatement), soft carbonation, chewy, dry, bittersweet finish. Fantastic brew from these guys. Hopheads need to get their hands on this one ASAP...
