COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Founders most complex, most innovative, most feared and yet most revered ale produced. Massive in complexity the huge malt character balances the insane amount of alphaís used to create this monster. More IBUís than any brewery has documented, more than you would believe and dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties. Dangerously drinkable and deliciously evil. We dare you to dance with the Devil. 112 IBUs

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2014 Bottle: Iím convinced that this is the absolute worst beer Founders produces. Iíve had 2011, 2012, and 2013 batches, all fresh as well as 2011 aged one year. Itís awful every time. No idea how people enjoy this. Too malty sweet. Onion and garlic heavy from Summit. Solvents, like acetone. Burning and hot and sticky sweet and overtly bitter. Aged was sweet, new bottles are more bitter but still just a hodge podge of a beer. Alcohol burn, acetone, pungent onion, solvent, hoppy & sweet boozy malt mess. Yuck!!

12 oz bottle, $5.99, Kroger Bridge St. Pours deep brown amber with large, white head. Aroma caramel, toffee, malts, pine, light notes of dark citrus. Flavor is hop-heavy and piney but simultaneously quite sweet with caramel. I expected this to be overpoweringly bitter, but itís really balanced and, despite being almost over-the-top, not horrifyingly bitter. Booze, clearly a high ABV beer without smacking you in the face with alcohol. Full bodied, medium to high stickiness. Really, really good.

Bottle. Really nice amber-red with a medium head. Aroma is complex, sweet, alcohol. Taste bitter up front sweet, fruity finish and way too much alcohol.

Not a well balanced beer. Tastes more like their dirty bastard vs centennial. Alcohol overpowers everything else of flavour.

Enjoyed straight from the bottle after some nice singletrack with friends at the lake. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle.Dark red pour with a slight, quickly dissipating pink head. Sweet and boozy with fruity undertones. The booziness overpowers the hops. A great sipping beer, but not a lot of hop-forward bitterness for a triple IPA

Bottle pours a cloudy dark red with a small white head. Aroma was alcohol, caramel, sugar, vanilla, floral, and some citrus. Taste was more like a barleywine than any IPA Iíve ever had. Sweet and boozy with lots of caramel, toffee, sugar, and faint hints of flowers and grapefruit. With 112 IBU I was thinking it would be more bitter, but it had so much sweet notes that it pretty much canceled it out. Ok beer, but not worth the price honestly.

Draft at Founders. Pours a dark ruby red. Aroma and taste are fruity and caramel.

12 ounce bottle purchased at HyVee in Cedar Rapids, Iowa while on a trip to visit the inlaws (a hefty $5.49). Pours a dark reddish-amber hue with one finger of off-white foam. AROMA has noticeable boozy alcohol throughout as well as notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, perfumy floral hops, citrus, wet pine, and resiny hops. FLAVOR has significant barleywine-type elements with hoppy notes of sticky pine sap and sticky heavy grapefruit, but also a good balancing presence of caramel and bready malts...and some booze. Finishes slightly more sweet than bitter. All elements improve as the beer warms up (and the booziness is somewhat lessened as well). Good, but still a far cry from Pliny the Younger. (1437, 884)

Pours cloudy chestnut, slight of white head, slight thin lacing. Aroma caramel, toffee, bready malt, burnt sugar dominate, slight earthy, piney hops, alcohol present. Taste slight bitter, bready, toffee, slight burnt sugar, earthy hops, big alcohol throughout. Mouthfeel full body, lower carbonation, alcohol astringency and warming, balanced finish. Overall fantastic barley wine, cannot rate as ipa, not a lot of hop Aroma or flavor, it is definetly there to cut through the huge malt bill though.

The aroma is malty with a slight hint of hops - some caramel and a slight citrus. Pours a nice amber with a light brown head, fully diminishing, good lacing. The taste is sour with a little bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation soft and the finish bitter. Overall OK, had in the past and thought better of it.
