cathcacr (586), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 7, 2005 Updated: Jun 4, 2006 Appearance is a dead ringer for Arrogant Bastard. What a start! Aroma comes IIIIIPA-standard. As I lick the head foam, I get sweetness. Tastes and smells sticky from the get-go. Intimidating. 286 IBUs sear the tongue on first sip. Expletive, I like it already! Expletive, expletive. Gotta start up that Zappa CD again for this one. I can tell this one’s got ridiculous amounts of alcohol in it, too. Expletive. Sticky sweet, molassesy, and some really expletived hop character, I don’t even know where to begin much less end. Got some barley-wine bizzatch character going on here. Defies categorization, like it exists in its own plane beyond good and evil. Wait a moment while I clean my palate for another tasting with a standard IPA. Holy smokes, I’ve encountered another Worthy beer. You’d better not be a pussy if you dare to dance with this devil. Only a further uninterrupted stream of expletives could properly convey the impression this gives. Expletive-face grin going on with this drinker’s face. This is one ridiculous, over-the-top bitch’s brew. I want more!
Butters (1623), Virginia, USA Nov 5, 2009 bottle shared with maniac. Semi-clear reddish amber with small tan thin head. Nose is massive sweet maltiness and slight cherries. Amazing job of hiding the abv. After a year of age, this has mellowed nicely. msante79 (785), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Oct 31, 2009 12oz bottle from Binny’s River Grove. Pours dark reddish orange with thin white head. Aroma is citrus hops, sweet malt, caramel, and some light booze. Flavor is loaded with sweet malt, caramel, citrus, hop bitterness and finishes boozy and overly sweet. I bought the bottle at room temperature and threw it in the freezer and found it quite enjoyable when it was really cold, but as it warmed it turned into a cloying sweet boozy mess. Almost had a cough syrup quality at the end. Reminded me of a poorman.s DFH 120. I love Founders and DIPAs but I am not digging this. bsp77 (199), Minnesota, USA Oct 29, 2009 Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Burnt reddish-copper with thin head and slight lacing.
Aroma of sweet fruity malts, grapefruit and citrus hops, some alcohol noticeable in the background.
Hop onslaught - definite grapefruit and citrus. Complex sweet malts, with caramel, toast and fruit. Somewhat bitter at the finish. 112 IBUs? - not that I can tell, but I am sure the 12% alcohol is tempering the bitterness. However, the hop oils really do coat the tongue. Slight taste of alcohol (less than expected).
Thick and chewy, extremely smooth, low carbonation. Warming.
Excellent slow sipper (I took an hour). Overall, great balance of hops and malt but the relatively low bitterness makes this seem more like a hop-forward Barleywine than an Imperial IPA.
glennmastrange (810), hobe sound, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2009 Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of roasted and caramel, heavy orange and spruce for the hops, moderate broth for the yeast, and date, cherry brown sugar and tobacco in the background. Head is small creamy/frothy, off-white, with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear orange/red. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then the long finish is lightly sweet and acidic, and moderately bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy, with a soft carbonation and a heavily alcoholic finish. A softer carbonation than I expected, but this is still a world class DIPA. tomthompson89 (1460), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 25, 2009 First beer my wife had on an empty stomach after 10 hour trip, wooo hoo she liked it... ruby amberish pour some head but little nose is boozy, hoppy and some sweet malts to balance flavor is beautiful, hoppy with a great booze kick. bought a few of these. beernovice39 (244), South Carolina, USA Oct 23, 2009 Reddish orange color, very little head at all.. Hops and pine scent but not as strong as I thought. Very bitter but nice....very dry finish...I do taste a tad of the booze but not much. This is good stuff but not morth the $ IMHO. Just had double trouble and I like it more. kassner (429), Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 17, 2009 I had this beer from a bottle at Mad Mex so I can’t imagine how good it might be on draft. Poured and looked like golden honey with huge hops without any bad aftertatste. This has got to be one of the best beers I have had and just got better as it warmed in the glass. ononews9 (25), Hanover, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 14, 2009 12 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. strong aroma with a strong perfum-like taste that hits you with every sip. a good beer. quite flavorful, and hard to believe it has 12% abv.
