Commercial Description:
Founders most complex, most innovative, most feared and yet most revered ale produced. Massive in complexity the huge malt character balances the insane amount of alpha’s used to create this monster. More IBU’s than any brewery has documented, more than you would believe and dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties. Dangerously drinkable and deliciously evil. We dare you to dance with the Devil. 112 IBUs

A: This one has the color of an amber ale. A wonderful red kind of murky color. It has lots of bubbles racing to the top, and leaves some lacing as I consumed it. S: Hops anyone? This baby is kicking out the smell of fragrant citrus and pine with a nice sweet touch. T: Hop Heads rejoice, this one has kick. This beer is on the verge of being a barley wine. It has a wonderful hop kick which is married to a wonderful sweetness that hides just below the hops. It finishes with the sting of the alcohol and at 13% ABV it’s for good reason. M: Thick and syrupy. This baby goes down like honey. This would be the ultimate winter IPA.

Aroma is lovely yet quite strong. Malty sweet , alcohol but nice, Hops aren’t as defined as I’d expect, but not surprising considering 13%. Finishes nicely w/ hops though for a long time.

4 pack bottle purchased at Whole Foods. Pours a beautiful dark red. Visually I cannot think of a better looking beer. Initially had more carbonation than I expected for such a dark red beer. medium head, about a quarter inch that disappates after a few minutes. Light lacing. Smells of fresh citrus, hops and carmel, maybe even some chocolate. Very full mouth feel, smooth and full at first but then an explosion of bitterness and hops that lingers until your next sip, absolutely delicious with a long long finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep red with a tiny light tan head. Aroma is pretty much pure grapefruit hops. Flavor is bitter hops and fairly strong citrus/grapefruit hops, some more grassy hops and a little caramel sweetness. The bitterness builds up pretty strongly after just a couple of sips. Alcohol is hardly noticeable except for a bit of burn in the finish. This is very well done. I do, however, question why RateBeer’s description above gives 200+ IBUs while the Founders website only claims 112 IBUs.

Pours a deep hazy red orange with a lot of effervescence, but not really any head. A orange-beige foamy rim though. The aroma is extremely complex with brown sugar, scotch, resin, citrus, alcohol... there is almost too much going on. The flavor hits first with a deep caramelized malt with a toffee nuttiness. The next wave is the extraordinary bitter. However, because of the strong malt, I almost get a spectrum of fruit on the way to bitter resin. It is as though the flavor profile sweeps through golden raisins, to apricot, until the bitter takes over with a citrus rind and finally the resin. The body is extremely rich. Though this beer kind of needs it to balance out the ridiculous bitterness, it might almost be a little bit too sweet. That would really be my only complaint.

This stuff is real thick. Pours a viscous red brown with lots of haze and a thin white head. Caramel malt aroma with lots of grain. Thick floral and pine hops. Sweet nutty malt flavor. Quickly finishes with tons of hops. Very heavy but good.
