jstraw (415), Oak Park, Illinois, USA Apr 15, 2008 In bottle at Jerry’s. Caramel colored, visibly thick, with good, creamy tan head / Complex, candied nose of caramel and orange peel with big body easily masking the big alcohol / Full-bodied, with rich, sweet caramel malts, a touch cloying, with big, chewy, biting hops / Flavors of caramel and figs with undertones of orange peel / Very good, but massive malt body moves it out of the double ipa realm for me. Agree with the apt comparison to Dogfish 120, below.
juiceisloose (281), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 20, 2008 Courtesy fantomas23. Pours a dark marron color with a small off white head that settles to a thin film. The aroma is of piney and citrus hops, the sweet caramel malt backbone, and a hint of alcohol. The flavor was a little hoppy up front with the citrus and piney hops, but they become overwhelmed by the sweet caramel malt and alcohol. Has a really nice sweet flavor in this one with some alcohol warmth. Medium bodied and very smooth and easy to drink. The hops show up again on the backend for a bitter finish. This wasn’t as hoppy as I was hoping for as the malts and alcohol seemed to take over everything. Pretty good, and certainly a nice one to try. KieferUGA (302), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 18, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a murky, leathery color. Thin head with a good amount of lacing. Aroma is a hop expolsion. Citrus, piney, earthy, they are all there. Thin mouthfeel, but the flavor is the king. Sweet at the beginning, this beer gives way to a bitter, hoppy finish. Tons of warming alcohol as well. What a delightful beer. brewmandisch (2), elkton, Maryland, USA does not count Jul 18, 2008 I loved this beer but I am still learning how to write a review so I an a little thin on description here.
Not so much an IPA impression as a hoppy Barley wine. really enjoyed it. naivepegasus (139), USA Jul 14, 2008 Pours a dark ruby with a thin film of soapy head that quickly dissipates. Strong smell of caramel and syrupy hops. This beer doesn’t mask the alcohol as much as you’d think- sharp alcohol taste is matched with a hint of toffee and ends with a strong bitter aftertaste of burnt toast. Not bad at all, but I think I overhyped it in my head. pforei (317), USA Jul 14, 2008 Bottle from Foodery, Philly. Copper color no head and matching flat mouthfeel. Aroma of chewy malt and syrupy hops (not fresh and lively but heavy and resiny) and alcohol. Sweet candied brandy, fermented fruit and hops. Thick body. Meh.
