Smoky malt dominates. I’m not really a fan of brown ales and though I like McChouffe the smokiness of this beer didn’t do it for me.

Scotch malt peatiness and thick sweetness. Rich and refreshing. Sweet at the finish.

Never had a scotch ale before this was great. Similer to a stout it did not need to be warmed. Light slightly smokey flavor with a hint of subtle sweetness. Quite a nice strong brew! Not hoppy thankfully.

Murky amber color in my snifter with a small tan head. Nose of plum and toast with a little alcohol. Toffee sweetness with faint smoke somewhere in the background. It seemed a little thin for the style, even with the alcohol burn on the tongue. I don’t like this style, but...

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2005 pours mahogony hue with a faint tan head. hoppy, sweet, dark fruits, plum, red grapes and lighty roasted notes predominate the aroma. this beer is much more hoppy than i thought it would be. big plum, citric hops, roast, lightly chocolate and carmel notes. this is somewhat reminiscent of bear republic’s version, but this version leans more towards the scotch ale category. Nice fruity notes on the finish. there is that characteristic founders yeast note-dry! This is another winner from founders. I think my bottle may have been a little old and its still very good!

Earthen aroma. Foamy head. sweet malty taste. Full bodied flavor with a nice bitter finishing. Founders best offering.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 cb (810) - Roeland Park, Kansas, USA - MAY 17, 2004
Malt, smoke, peat moss in aroma. Charcoal, chocolate and moist woody notes. Slightly hoppy and sweet finish -- good example of style, one of my favorites.

Bottle pours dark caramel, petite creamy head, with decent lacing. Caramal, pitted fruit, and malts on the nose. Certainly smells like a Scotch Ale. Raisins, figs, plums, nuts, and caramel on the tongue. Rather good too! Slight alcohol tinge, but tiz very manageable. Quite smooth, good body, creamy mouthfeel. Slightly bitter finish, a bit bready. Light chocolate notes emerge as the beer warms, as well as sour notes in the finish. May not be completely true to the style, but I enjoyed this one. Thanks to hopsrus for the trade!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gunshy (479) - Ohio, USA - APR 24, 2004
This beer poured a hazy reddish brown color and formed light tan foamy head that left circular lace as it subsided. A medium amount of carbonation and some sediment is present. A complex aroma of malt, caramel, raisins and other dark fruit. Not as heavy an aroma as others, but more in the mix if you will. The flavor was of malt, caramel, slight bit of chocolate and a hint of raisin. A slightly lighter body than I would expect for this style and slightly sweet finish. The alcohol is well hidden in this one. Also best if had at cellar temp or just slightly cooler to help draw out more of it's character
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Alcoholist (570) - Peoria, Illinois, USA - MAR 28, 2004
Cloudy brown with an average head. Aroma is malty, lightly hopped and slightly yeasty. Flavour is slightly sweet, earthy, and moderately acidic. Not malted aggressively enough for a scotch ale.
