3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours brownish red with a thick off white head. Aroma is thick and smoky malt with some sweetness. Taste has a little peat smoke in it with lots of malt. A sneaky strong beer, too. Somewhat like an 80 or 90 shilling style ale, but with a bit more carbonation. Finishes a little thick, but overall pretty nice.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
nice dark brown color but the thin tan head only lasted a few seconds. smells very sweet and slightly smoky, sort of like a good bock. taste is sickly sweet and cloying. feels smooth and sticky going down. finishes a little bitter and some of that smoke finally emerges in the flavor. not terrible but if you are going to call it a Scotch ale it should at least have some earthy/smoky complexity.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Small but dense beige-brown head over hazy, opaque chestnut beer. Sweet, maltsyrup nose, but with touches of both hops and alcohol. Sweet rum cake, laced with hops and raisins. Quite roasted, too. Hopped & roasted, as a cake that has been thouroughly baked on the outside, becoming bitter-burnt, hiding the sweetness inside. A bit syrupy, affirmed by the MF. It is pulling a bit in two directions, ending a bit irresolute. Well bodied. Again undecided syrupy - thinner. Alcohol obvious, even some fusels. Especially the aftertaste betrays resins, whilst the smokiness spoken of, is very tardy in coming in the open. Nice, if undecided beer. Thanks to Eric from BA!

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
In short: A nice easy to drink hoppy scotch ale.
How: Bottle 12oz, 6+ months old
The look: Cloudy dark burgundy body with a short-lived tan head.
In long: Nose of barley candy and tobacco. Taste has lots barley candy, some residual sugar, some kind of spicy liquorice and a light berry flavour. Very little fruity flavours. Pleasant body but certainly not a thick decadent scotch ale. A bit oily. A lot more hoppy than average for the style but Iím in the minority who prefers hoppy scotch ales. Tasty resinous oily citrusy hops makes it highly drinkable. Alcohol is apparent but doesnít detract from the drinkability. This is like a session scotch ale. Not often that I come across a dirty bastard that I find very sweet.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sept. 2006 - I have to say, I did actually enjoy this beer more than the rating indicates. However, for style, this was a stinker. Beer poured with dark brown color with next to a little head and small lacing. The aroma was smoky...a lot more so than the flavor. The flavor was curiously devoid of smoke and earthiness, but abounding in candy flavor and caramel. Rich creamy mouthfeel was the highlight of this one. Some hops were definitely noticeable. If you are hankering for a scottish ale, this isnít your beer, though...and for that, it gets a big BOOOO!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a thick dark golden with a small off-white head. Had a ton of malt in taste including a sweet toffee character. There was also a bit of hop character in the taste which confused me a little. Just seemed like a bit of hops for a scotch ale. Donít get me wrong, it still tasted great and Iíd probably buy it again.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This has a distinct smooth flavor for the people that prefer ales over I.PA.ís . Does have a sharp after taste from the hops, however it does hold down quite well. Great for a social drinker wanting to experiment with new measures, but drink wisely. The 8.3% alcohol leaves more than to be desired.

This is one of my favorite Scottish Ales, and theyíre my favorite. The aroma is caramely, malty, slightly toasty and slightly alcoholic. It has a wonderful Scotch Ale color. The flavor matches the style while still incorporating hops more than many other Scotch Ales. The palate is smoother though still retains a gritty heaviness. Overall.......YEAH!!! I LOVE IT. GREAT JOB FOUNDERS.

Clear garnet with a thin head. Nice smell of smoked and peat malts. Med/heavy body. Good malty sweet, smoked, earthy flavor with a mild hop flaver to finish. Very good scotch ale here. 32606

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Listen kids. Do as I say and not as I do. Do not pour firmly with this one unless you want a six inch head.
Pours dark brown with a tan head that is massive from way too firm a pour. Nose is a mass of complexity. Definite malts here. Caramel, wood tones, and just a good amount of things to take in. Flavor is pretty meaty with a consistent wood character going on. Thick caramel sweetness is there as well. Nice and robust. It seems like I am getting a small amount of alcohol on the flavor though. Feel has a decent carbonation and a smooth liquid feel. Overall pretty good. Nice and hearty and pretty rustic. I canít say it is really lacking, but I canít say it is the smoothest of the style I have ever had.
