Thanks to heemer77 for this one. Wonderful deep red appearance with a creamy, yeasty, lasting head. Yeast is most prevalant in the nose. Caramel and hops also noticeable, and a smoky feel like scotch as well. Good, but not exceptional.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a neat beer. Not sure iíve ever had a scotch ale but there is a strong chocolate presence. Malt dominates, but still some mild hops balancing it all out. There is a slight alcohol burn but nothing you canít handle. Brown in color. Darn good.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep red, garnet with thick compact creamy head. Aroma is a nutty malt with a bit of sweetness and a hop presence. Flavor is quite malty, both sweet and lightly roasted and a nice dry grapefruit hop finish. Strong sweetness and a hint of alcohol.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Another great beer from Founders, this one pours an opaque black with tinges of dark bronze capped by a thin layer of dense foam. The aroma is decidedly malty but hints of hops. It also has that tasty mustiness you get from other good porters, such as Stone Smoked Porter. The mouthfeel is heavy and velvety. Chocolaty hints give way to a tidal wave of sweet maltiness. The finish is complex, consisting of a backdrop of characteristic Scotch ale alcohol flavor punctuated by modest cherry tones, a more pronounced hop presence, and finally, the gentle sting of carbonation at the back of the throat.
I had this beer on draft at MacNivenís, a Scottish-themed restaurant and bar on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indy. MacNivenís has an anxious-makingly large selection of interesting beers on draft and in bottles. But what impresses me most is that *they serve them to you in appropriate glasses.* The Dirty Bastard came in a snifter, but Iím sure itís the only thing by that name that would smell as sweet.

I guess I think beers look Mahogany, because Iím saying thatís the color they are more and more. This is a good looking beer though. The aroma is light and malty, not really very descript. The flavor is dominated by caramel maltÖperiod! There may be some smokey hints but they are very light. Creamy medium body. Overall, I really found this beer enjoyable. It was what it was, nothing too complex but fulfilling.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2005 Fiery red color, decent lasting head. Sweet, fruity, toasty aroma. Big soft sweet palate and tons of caramel flavor. Some nutty/roasty chocolate malt flavors. A little bitter and alcoholic in the finish. I didnít know anything about it and wasnít prepared for such a big beer. Put a couple away in the cellar, could be interesting in a couple years.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Crimson and browns, huge fluffy light tan head (which didnít seem right). Nose was decent with notes of musty toasted caramel, toffee, and chocolate, with softer notes of moist cavendish tobacco, and cherry. Flavor was sweet and malty up front with more cherry, musty caramel, and toffee tones throughout, and only a very light hop bitterness to round it off. Medium bodied crazy mega-fizzy carbonation, semi-dry, malty finish. Had to be an old bottle. Either way, of the Founderís brews Iíve tried to date, this one was the first swing and a miss....

Deep amber-reddish brown brew with omlya ring of tan bubbles.Rich malts on the nose with a little earthiness along with some dark cherries.Funky in a good way as the earthiness really offsets what I thought was going to be a sweet beer.It is rather thick and has a nice mouthfeel.

Poured a dark brown with a red tint. and a small light tan head. Malty aroma and a touch of smoke and peat. You get alcohol if you breath in deep. Flavor has a little more smokiness. Malty and lightly sweet with a bitter finish mixed with some alcohol. Medium bod and a good bit of chest warming.

12 oz bottle. Clear amber with a smallish head. Aroma of caramel and some dried fruits. The first thing I look for is some sort of peat flavor and you really have to dig to find any. Unfortunatly, there isnít enough for my liking. Thsi is more of a flavorful Amber to me, which is fine. Texture is smooth and creamy. Not bad.
