Brilliant reddish brown with thick off-white head. Carmel, roasted notes and hops on the nose to start. Creamy mouthfeel, with a green hop finish. Carmel, Toffee, pIne, and light roasted flaovors dominate. Well balanced brew!

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark and thick caramel brown color, rusty orange edges, thin sized but thickly set and lumpy tan cap, keeps a skim and collar nearly the whole glass down; lacing moderately coats in strings and graceful sheeting. Aroma is chalked full of some really nice caramel, deep and inviting, nuances of brown sugar, vanilla, earthy roasted malts, smoked husks and hay. Taste is crispy and full, crunchy burntish cookies, maple and brown sugar sweetness with roasted grain, husky toasted edges. Has a caramel loaded middle and finish with a firm hold and feel of caramel malts with a crisp toasted grain dryness creeping around the surface late. Nice creamy body and fullness with just the right amount of roasty crispness and drying toasty grain bitterness. Slight dry hop background appears as it warms and where this beer really comes into its own. Letting this warm up some is ideal. Very approachable, very drinkable, very good stuff! One of the better American brewed Wee heavyís Iíve encountered.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2005 Dark clear mahogany body. Thin soapy off-white head. Extremely pleasing, but a little too light aroma. Slightly smokey, but mostly sweet-like malts, chocolate, etc. Smokiness picks up in the taste. Nice sweet smoke and caramel toffee with some good hop bitterness to round it out. Full taste and a little oily in the mouth.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Smoky malt dominates. Iím not really a fan of brown ales and though I like McChouffe the smokiness of this beer didnít do it for me.

Never had a scotch ale before this was great. Similer to a stout it did not need to be warmed. Light slightly smokey flavor with a hint of subtle sweetness. Quite a nice strong brew! Not hoppy thankfully.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Murky amber color in my snifter with a small tan head. Nose of plum and toast with a little alcohol. Toffee sweetness with faint smoke somewhere in the background. It seemed a little thin for the style, even with the alcohol burn on the tongue. I donít like this style, but...

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 19, 2005 pours mahogony hue with a faint tan head. hoppy, sweet, dark fruits, plum, red grapes and lighty roasted notes predominate the aroma. this beer is much more hoppy than i thought it would be. big plum, citric hops, roast, lightly chocolate and carmel notes. this is somewhat reminiscent of bear republicís version, but this version leans more towards the scotch ale category. Nice fruity notes on the finish. there is that characteristic founders yeast note-dry! This is another winner from founders. I think my bottle may have been a little old and its still very good!
