basewars (144), Albany, New York, USA Jan 1, 2009 Pours dark brown with off-white head. Aroma is of malty sweetness, fruits, some liquor and plenty of hops. Flavor is similar, with a bit of peet and grapefruit. Slight bitter finish. Very good. jmm635 (249), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 1, 2009 Dark amber color with a big tan head. Aromas of malts, caramel, surprisingly strong on the hops, and whiff of woody scotch. Flavor is pretty similar. Again, a surprising amount of hops. I thought the scotch flavor left me with a very dry mouth. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 31, 2008 Good Scotch ale. Pours amber with a thin head. Aroma is mainly malt. Flavor of malt, caramel, dark fruit, and some sugar. Had a lot more body than a normal scotch ale. Good stuff. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Dec 25, 2008 courtesy of frampin.
Pours amber - ruby with mahogany head.
Aroma is biscuity and malty with light roastiness.
Taste, caramel malts, grainy mouthfeel, light chocolate and dark fruits.
Very enjoyable like all Founders beers, and fits the style very well. mhelgason (495), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Dec 22, 2008 almost no head into amber body. aromas of moderate caramel and moderate citrus and a touch of soap. flavor is light bittersweet throughout. long finish duration. slightly stickly mouthfeel. pretty darn good. ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Dec 18, 2008 draft at barleys in greenville. pours a dark red/ruby color with a bubbly tan head and decent lacing. aroma us definitely malt dominated with chestnuts, caramel malt, coffee, and dark fruit. flavors of rye bread, cinnamon, dark malts, and brown sugar that finished with a touch of hops. a very complex beer with a heavy mouthfeel that has a rich flavor. good for a winter night by the fire. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Dec 15, 2008 Bottle. Rough. I have never had a Scotch Ale quite this burly before. Almost a tartness to the charcoal and peat that is likely a result of the too-bright red color. Lacks the velvety texture usually found. mattmc1973 (300), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Dec 11, 2008 Updated: Feb 6, 200912 oz bottle, pours dark brown, cannot see through it. Frothy tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, malt, and figs, with some slight smoke. Taste of roasted malt, dark fruit, and brown sugar, with slight hop finish. Medium to heavy body, with nice carbonation. Overall, a very nice scotch ale, I would drink more of this!
Update: I got a 1/2 barrel of this for my kegerator, and tapped it tonight. On draft, I am enjoying this even more!
