I don’t see this beer as red or ruby at all, I held it up to the light and got a pure brown for sure. A beautiful brown, but not the scarlet red of a porter in front of a light bulb.
Definitely can taste the heat of the alcohol, some smoke and peat, would make a perfect chaser for a big snifter of Lagavulin 16. djones (116), Michigan, USA

Deep ruby amber red when held up to the light, though more like motor oil sitting in my glass. Almost as thick as oil too. Malty and earthy aroma, as is the taste. Very rich and thick feel, with high toasted and roasted flavors with caramel sweetening the hops. I’m not a big fan of scotish ales, too thick and gooey for me. phishpond417 (1914), Madison, Wisconsin, USA

This beer had a whiskey taste in the finish. Lots of sweet malted flavors. Snojerk321 (1938), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 28, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours deep brown with a ruby hue. Some light lacing came with the small beige head. The nose reminded me of a lighter version of Angel’s Share (not sure why). Lots of chocolate and toasted malt on the palate, creamy finish. I have had this one before but was really excited to try it again. Pours a beautiful deep mahogany color with a small off-white color head. The aroma consists of a LOT of caramel malts with hints of dried fruits, and hops. The taste was a wonderful mix of caramel, dried fruits, and mild hops with a slight lingering of alcohol. It was medium bodied and stuck to my mouth making me want more. Finished very smooth with a good lingering taste. I really enjoyed this beer! I wish I could have this one on a daily basis... djmcfar (64), Ixonia, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2008 Dark red and brown color - short creamy head - mild aroma - slightly smokey and coffee flavor. Smooth finish for a Scottish Ale. I gave it extra points for the alcohol content because it is hard to believe that it is 8.3 ABV for such a smooth Ale. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2008 Deep red pur with thinnish off white head. Looks a bit like unfiltered cranberry juice, which is kinda unique. Nose is a little faint, but definately had some nice malt characteristics along with a touch of smoke. Flavor is nice caramel sweetness, though not overpowering, along with a mild fruit and smoke combo. Hops add enough bitterness to be balancing but not dominating. Very nice beer. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 7, 2008 Pours coke caramel with a smallish white head. Aroma of toffee, coffee, and whisky. Flavor a woody mix of sweet and whisky alcohol. Fairly warming on the finish. A nice beer, but I’m not blown away. Doesn’t hold up with Old Chub or Wee Heavy.
