Reddish brown with a thin head. Sweet malty aroma. Sweet malty taste to go with dry hop finish. A little on the sweet side but still pretty good. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Mar 27, 2008 Caramelized malt aromas. Amber brown colors. Good bitter caramelized malty flavors, rich, earthy, somewhat sweet to balance. Fairly strong and solid palate. Bittersweet duration with a woody finish. Good. grimreeser (795), Minnesota, USA Mar 23, 2008 Pours a dark amber with a small dark tan head. Aroma of caramel, smoke, and some brown sugar. Starts out with a nice sweetness, but there is a lingering bitterness that I don’t care for. davidoc (113), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 21, 2008 Poured a dark auburn color with a very small head that disappeared quickly. Mild aroma. Sweet carmel taste, but sweetness did not linger. Very smooth, belying strength. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Mar 21, 2008 Poured a brick color with a sweet nose of malts, caramel, peat and wood. The flavor was sweet and smoky. A very good Scotch Ale.Finishes of sweet. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 20, 2008 Reddish brown body, dark, slightly cloudy at the end, almost no head. Nose of dark roasted malts, peat smoke, and warming alcohol. Taste of dark malts, an almost Bourbon like alcohol warmth, toffee, espresso, smoke, and more hops than I would expect in a Scotch ale. Mouth a little syrupy ... maybe more lively carbonation would help. But a good beer. Syd (888), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Mar 19, 2008 Updated: Mar 22, 2008Bottle pours a deep garnet color with very little head or lace. The aroma is powerful malt, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, peat, and just plain excellent. The flavor is really is so well rounded from the sweet malt and peat notes. Some mild pear notes in the finish with the peat. The palate is fairly rich, but does not at all become sticky like ales like this can tend to do. Carbonation survives pretty well and is quite lively in fact. Overall, this is an awesome beer. I need to get more of this.
