IlanMan (816), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Feb 10, 2008 Poured a thick dark golden with a small off-white head. Had a ton of malt in taste including a sweet toffee character. There was also a bit of hop character in the taste which confused me a little. Just seemed like a bit of hops for a scotch ale. Don’t get me wrong, it still tasted great and I’d probably buy it again. Unique69crazy (119), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Feb 10, 2008 This has a distinct smooth flavor for the people that prefer ales over I.PA.’s . Does have a sharp after taste from the hops, however it does hold down quite well. Great for a social drinker wanting to experiment with new measures, but drink wisely. The 8.3% alcohol leaves more than to be desired. ScotYankBard (16), USA Feb 8, 2008 This is one of my favorite Scottish Ales, and they’re my favorite. The aroma is caramely, malty, slightly toasty and slightly alcoholic. It has a wonderful Scotch Ale color. The flavor matches the style while still incorporating hops more than many other Scotch Ales. The palate is smoother though still retains a gritty heaviness. Overall.......YEAH!!! I LOVE IT. GREAT JOB FOUNDERS. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Feb 7, 2008 Clear garnet with a thin head. Nice smell of smoked and peat malts. Med/heavy body. Good malty sweet, smoked, earthy flavor with a mild hop flaver to finish. Very good scotch ale here. 32606 RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 3, 2008 Listen kids. Do as I say and not as I do. Do not pour firmly with this one unless you want a six inch head.
Pours dark brown with a tan head that is massive from way too firm a pour. Nose is a mass of complexity. Definite malts here. Caramel, wood tones, and just a good amount of things to take in. Flavor is pretty meaty with a consistent wood character going on. Thick caramel sweetness is there as well. Nice and robust. It seems like I am getting a small amount of alcohol on the flavor though. Feel has a decent carbonation and a smooth liquid feel. Overall pretty good. Nice and hearty and pretty rustic. I can’t say it is really lacking, but I can’t say it is the smoothest of the style I have ever had. yobdoog (1427), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Feb 3, 2008 Aroma is pretty solid. A lot of resiny scents, sweet and a hint of smoke. Taste is clean and smooth, sweet, no bitterness but has that smoke to balance it nicely. Very good. naivepegasus (183), USA Feb 2, 2008 Pours very dark ruby with less than a finger of rapidly dissipating head. Smell is sweet, honey and raisin. Taste is really rich and complex, with raisin, oatmeal, and just a hint of smoke accompanying the slight hop bitterness of the aftertaste. This is a beer that lingers- I really like it. StFun (535), Indiana, USA Jan 21, 2008 Updated: Jan 28, 2008I was really let down by this one. I’ve been wanting some Founders, because they are rated highly and some of their brews sound delicious...but this one wasn’t it. Very nice and complex aroma and appearance, full of roasty malts, carmel, hops, and smoke. But taste wise is where this one fell apart for me. Tastes thick in some places, thin in others. Very sticky and syrupy on the back end, and the alcohol seemed to get int he way of the flavor. Almost tasted like someone threw several different brews into a blender, topped off with orange juice, vodka, and maple syrup, mixed and served. Not my cup of tea, but I can’t wait to try some of Founder’s other brews.
