A touch fruity in the nose but it moves on to a chocolate/caramel flavor. I was hoping for a dark rummy raisiny flavor but it wasn’t there. Still It was nice. Very smooth mouthfeel, rounded with light carbonation. Nicely heavy without overwhelming the palate. Plenty malt forward, with just a touch of leafy hop, without being overly sweet. scrawfis (143), Naperville, Illinois, USA

Nothing is overpowering in this ale. Would definitely get this one again. jezmez68 (334), Chesterton, Indiana, USA

Heavy aroma of figs, toffee, a hint of chocolate. Flavor is hearty with raisins. toffee, figs, a hint of chocolate in the back end. Very tasty, chewy, complex, but deceptively drinkable. Mouthfeel is thick, creamy and coats your mouth. Excellent, as is most from this brewer.

Medium-sized thick creamy light beige head that clings to the glass. Feels thick and rich. Carbonation level is fairly low and the beer has high viscosity. Rich caramel flavours with toffee and chocolate. Thick and oily texture. Notes of paper and candy sugar. Sweet, but not really that sweet given the otherwise rich and viscous beer. Very tasty. mkobes (2104), paramus, New Jersey, USA

This is one of the best Scottish Ales I've had. Brown colored with a head that crosses the glass, transluscent. Aroma of malt very similiar to an ESB. Carmel flavor with enough bitterness to make it more than one dimensional, but not enough to dominate the malt character. Bitter, dry finish, excellent beer! Lubiere (4557), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

In aroma, a woody vinous aroma, licorice, lactic acids and butterscotch, rich and pleasant. In mouth, a sweet caramel, licorice, raisins, alcohol warmth. This bastard is classy, rich and complex. Early 2007.
