Alcohol makes itself known in a nice way. Delicious beer from a brewery I wish I had known about earlier. surffisher (196), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

Pours slightly hazy copper with a small light tan head that dissipates rather quickly. Nice malty aroma; sweet and figgy with some peaty notes when it warms. Complex malty flavor profile, with lots of dark fruit along with some peat/light smoke. Finishes somewhat dry, providing nice balance. Medium-full mouthfeel, with moderately high carbonation, and some assertive but not hot warming. Good strong scotch ale - a sipper in strength, but quite drinkable. Pours a dark ruby reddish brown with a good amount of frothy head. Notes of smoke, wood (seems to be oak) and ends on a dry note. Very good - I would get this again. ogglethorp (891), Ohio, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 2, 2006 Bottle. Deep red body supports a creamy, frothy, lovely light brown head. Sweet and richly malty aroma with notes of peat and roast and toffee and a hint of smoke. Very, very malty taste with healthy woody/peaty bitterness, thick toffee and dark caramel, light roast, red berry, and very light alcohol more towards the end. Very full-bodied with a wonderful hops/malt balance, no small feat considering the massive malt levels. Also a nice balance struck between sweet/bitter. Hoppy grit begins the aftertaste. This is almost sticky, but not quite, and thick to the point of being sludgy - about as full-tasting as a beer can be. Complex and mature, a really nice Scotch Ale! lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 19, 2007 Really beautiful pour- brown with amber highlights and two fingers of tan head. Strong grainy aroma with notes of smoke, peat, caramel, and molasses. Flavor is also grain and peat, with hints of sweet caramel, floral hops, strawberry, and some nice nuttiness and smoke in the finish. Thick sticky palate. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 1, 2007 12 oz bottle. Poured a shiny ruby to amber color with thin tan head. Aroma is a bit weak with sweet sweet malt and a slight roastiness. The flavor starts off with some hop bitterness and slight roasted maltiness. Then deeper roasted malt sweetness, sort of molasses, and a bit of dark fruit come out of hiding. Tough to pin down the flavor any more than that. Maybe there is a touch of brown sugar in there too. I also get a slight sense of the ABV. This beer really begins to shine when it is the third or fourth beer being consumed. The malts, hops and slight Barleywine taste really hits the spot.
