I now know what people mean by the smell of peat--this beer has it, a very earthy smell along with some alcohol and smokiness. Also has some chocolate cherry notes. Taste is more of the same. Not really noticing much bitterness than a slight bitter finish. Not a bad beer by any means, but I think this may be my first Scotch ale, so I’m not a huge fan of the style just yet. I may rerate once I get to the end up the sixer.
Rerate: Big, rich malts and piney hops noted, and this is a pretty good beer. Hops noticeable throughout, and upping the rating from 3.4 patrick767 (2066), fort wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2007 bottle - Pours dark ruby with a half inch head of thick foam that left some decent lacing. The aroma is all malt and dark fruit tones. Strong malt and fruit notes are balanced by a significant hops kick that comes through more in this full bodied brew’s finish. lethe (168), Stony Brook by way of Cincinnati, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 24, 2005 Maintains a small off-white head after the pour and is a surprisingly light brown-red in color. Nose is strongly sweet which is the case with the flavor as well. Caramel is definitely the overriding taste before it gives way to a subtle hop-infused bitterness. This is an excellent scotch ale that never betrays the high alcohol level.
