tbookman (618), Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 11, 2007 Dark brownish/ruby color - big aroma of roasted and sweet dark malts. Flavor is sweet and rich, with notes of brown sugar, syrup, licorice and a slight hint of smokiness. Finish is a little dry and sticky. All in all a nice, bold scotch ale.
satan165 (60), River Grove, Illinois, USA Jul 5, 2008 its easy to become so jaded that one thinks that entire styles are not for their personal pallete, until you encounter something that blasts those preconceptions to smithereens and you realize the sky is the limit! the aroma on this clobbers you over the head, the stench of ingrediients that have been painstakingly worked into something nearly ambrosia like. still, this beer makes no bones about its strength, its certainly detectable and to me seems even underrated but i can easily envision the pallete of another having trouble with the booze factor in this one (typical for the style in my experience). wonderful dark ruby color gives way to coffee and other porter like characteristics but without the outright roast of that style. smoke comes up front in the finish which is what steers this away from the stout category, mouthfeel and aftertaste linger seemingly forever. this is very intense and pretty impressive! Funknmilla (471), Absecon, New Jersey, USA Jul 2, 2008 12 oz bottle that pours ruddy brown with a tan head...mild sweet malts and a tinge of floral hops on the nose...also a metallic earthy scent...a slight stickiness left on the lips--bitter and smooth at the same time..its got some metal in the mouth as well...bitter citrus finish---and some flavor left in my mouth that tastes like warm milk...as it sits, some bitter toffee shows up in the finish mostly....it packs a sweet buzz, and it really creeps up on you..:) JFURYCAT (701), East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 28, 2008 I have to rate this one again. Good body with a layer of rather ashy cigarette smokiness which dissipates within a rich malty mix that has a chewable texture to it. Some dark fruits in here and overall a very drinkable andwell balanced beer. I didn’t like scotch ales before this one hit me. flatmatt (37), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Jun 28, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours dark red brown with lots of tan foam and a bit of debris. Aroma is sweet, raisin or grape, caramel, bready. Flavor is sweet caramel, raisiny, a bit of dark chocolate, with a little pleasant alcohol bite. A very nice and interesting beer. Flavor seems slightly out of balance, which is what stops this beer from hitting the 4.0 mark for me. CaryTheDude (98), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Jun 23, 2008 Sexy name. Sexy color. Sexy brew. Molasses up front, but a dry hoppy finish balances this beautifully. Haven’t had much luck with Scotch Ales in the past, but this one rocks.
