| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 25, 2009 Pours golden with a white head. The aroma has pine, grapefruit, tropical hops along with some sweet malt to balance things out. Medium / thick body with a lot of resin and very minor carbonation. The flavor starts piny with dry grapefruit hop traits with just enough malt to give it a nice balance. The finish has some funky hops and spice. Well done IIPA. kopher (309), New York, USA

tons of hops everywhere. mostly grass, pine, and grapefruit in the aroma.
flavor is also overwhelming hops. a bit of toasted malt underneath but it’s not exactly balanced. lots of grapefruit, pineapple and other hoppyness. too bitter overall i think.
alcohol is well hidden.
fairly heavy body, somewhat chewy.
the aftertaste really lingers and it feels like you’ve just eaten a hop pellet. not sure why that’s considered an almost perfect beer... JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2009 Bottle. Pours a light golden color with a thin white head. Aroma is citric and resinous with some milder floral characters. The taste is citric up front and the hops linger a bit, but left me wanting, considering it was a double IPA. Very little of the alcohol strength is showing. Will try again at some point. sebletitje (2000), Tampa, Florida, USA

Pours golden, thick white head.
Aroma / taste, pine hops leaving a nice bitter after taste as well as citrus fruits and grapefruit.
Amazingly well balanced with some caramel malts, and hints of sugar sweetness.
The alcohol leaves a nice warming palate, 2 of these might indeed lead to double trouble. ratman197 (3275), Arvada, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 22, 2009 Bottle poured a clear gold with a lasting offwhite head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, pine resin, grapefruit and some herbal notes. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, grapefruit, light pine and light earthiness with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish. VikingHammer (363), Lynnfield, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 19/20 | May 22, 2009 Pour a murky golden color with a white 1 finger head. Aroma is all citrus hops with a hint of pine. This is a hop addicts beer. Has a nice balance to the big hop flavor. Awesome DIPA. LtJudge (435), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 22, 2009 Pours a hazy yellow color with a medium white head.WOW.....The initial blast of citrus grapefruit is heavenly! After the initial shock of the hops, you can detect a very subtle but sweet caramel malt.If this tastes as good as it smells, I knew I was in for a treat! After coming down from my "Hop High" from the wonderful hop aromaI took a sip.As expected, nothing but Citrus hops...I was surprised to not find much malt backing as in alot of Imp IPA’s.Thats what is unique about this brew. Its is rather light bodied for a 9+ abv brew. But being a gigantic hophead this is not a problem!Great bitter finish. This brew hides the alcohol very well. Awesome brew! otakuden (567), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 21, 2009 I can’t count the number of times I was in trouble, had my name on the blackboard, or was made to stand in the corner. Not so much because I can’t remember, but because they are far too many to count. Of course, that was then and this is now. As much as I was a ruffian during my childhood, adulthood has mellowed me on certain fronts, while others have only spread their mischievous wings. After all, one can have far more fun as an adult, and get in equally as much trouble if not careful. It is with wry amusement and rumination that I pop open the Founders Double Trouble IPA, an Imperial IPA of hopefully troubling hop proportions.
Holding her up to the light, it would seem that the sun has descended into my glass, shining in brilliant orange and amber hues. Bursts of soft orange and white lace crackle along the sides of my glass while random bubbles stubbornly blotch her surface. A beautiful sight, indeed. Her hoppy presence broils and burbles like sunbursts reaching for the stars, or in this case, my nose. Prickly pine needles, sticky sap, orange, pink grapefruit, and cut grass are just the beginning. An aroma of acrid cat pee (don’t knock it until you try it) tells me there are plenty of Northwest hops in her as further crushed pine needles and cut grass emerge. I am in danger of getting burned, but I do not fear the fire, and so I dive right into her luminous depths for a head-on collision with hops, hops, and more hops. I am immediately amazed at how clean and pure her bitterness is, racing across my tastebuds and immediately cleansing my palate. If ever there were a great beer for pairing with thick, mouth-coating foods, this is it. Pine, grapefruit, and cut grass take center stage, leaving my tongue tingling. A full sticky mouthfeel is all pine sap and hop oils, which is even more impressive considering how well she cleans and clears the way for the next quaff. A bit more grapefruit bite emerges further in while orange shows her secretive sweet side. As fast as I am enjoying my Double Trouble IPA from Founders, she just as quickly disappears.
The Founders Double Trouble IPA was the second beer of a spectacular beer tasting event I attended not too long ago, and it still lingers as one of that tasting’s highlights. Of course, there was nary a bad beer at that tasting, which is a rarity for there are almost always one or two duds in the bunch. Double Trouble IPA is certainly no dud. Should you come across her in your travels, be sure to live a little dangerously and bring home some Double Trouble for yourself.
