COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

Bottle: Poured a light brown color ale with a medium size light brown foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of nutty liquor is quiet dominant with some overly sweet notes also identifiable. Tasted is dominated by the sweet fake nutty flavours with some overly sweet notes. Body is light with good carbonation. I didn’t appreciate the nutty liquor flavours and thought the beer was too sweet for my taste.

Pour from a 22oz bomber. Pours a nice nut brown ale color with a medium white head that lasts. Aroma is coffee, brown sugar, and malts. Taste is much the same. Roasted malts, followed by coffee and a nice brown sugar finish. Palate is much the same.

Pours dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is intense earthy, nutty malts with some mild hop bitterness. Taste is intense nutty, malty base with some minor hop bitterness and coffee notes. Solid brown.

Lubiere (10485) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 14, 2014
A clear brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a sweet nut extract, hazelnuts, coffee oily, OK. In mouth, a sweet fruity malt with butterscotch, hazelnuts, oily mouth feel, mocha chocolate, not bad. Bottle from Boutip.

Solid brown with some ruby highlights, small off-white head. Aroma is hazelnut, coffee, chocolate. Medium bodied, reasonable balance, smooth finish. Taste is coffee, hazelnut, chocolate, malt. Not bad but the taste doesn't quite deliver what the nose promises.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2014 Bottle: Mostly opaque, dark brown body with rusty copper overtones & mild ruby highlights. Appears to be under carbonated, as not much of a head appears at all, just a small, off-white collar. Aroma smells like hazelnut flavored ice coffee... Hints of cream, sugary lactose, & faint cocoa play under the strong hazelnut aroma. The taste is just the same - more of that iced coffee vibe loaded with hazelnut cream & lightly milky sweet undertones. Lingering cocoa powder finish with a coating hazelnut & bittersweet coffee bean essence. Body is a little thin & could use more carbonation, but it fits the flavors pretty well. I wasn’t nearly as disappointed as many others seemed to be... But I also wasn’t expecting so much. Plus, I love hazelnut, so I may be biased. Not worth the typical bomber price, but enjoyable for coffee/hazelnut lovers, no doubt.

750 ml bottle poured into a teku glass. Pours a hazed brown with a beige head of foam. The aroma has sweet nutty notes with weak coffee coming through behind them. The taste has chocolate and hazelnut influence with some vanilla attributes as well. Bigger bodied with a low carbonation.

Thanks to Chalsk! Pours brown with a small to medium brown head. Aroma is hazelnut coffee to a T with some roast and caramel for good measure. Taste is sweet with mild bitters. Medium bodied, silky texture and all around excellent.
