COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

Draught @ The Ginger Man. Dark opaque brown with small foamy tan head, hazelnut coffee aroma, medium carbonation, amazing hazelnut coffee taste, alcohol undertones, medium bitter finish. This is a great brew!

Bottle at James’ for a tasting with Ferris and Kraddel. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Nutty with a bit of black pepper, a touch of wood. Musk and nuts. Lingering toast and hazelnuts. Tasty enough, but a bit sweet.

Pours opaque mahogany with a thin light tan head. Roast malt aroma has a peppery overtone. Flavor has malty, caramel, nutty and spicy notes, the latter mostly cinnamon and pepper; thankfully, the pepper is not as strong as in the aroma. Where’s the coffee? Texture is firm and smooth, if not too fizzy.

APPEARANCE – nice brown color with limited head. NOSE - Strong hazelnut. FLAVOR – malt backbone with fairly strong hazelnut flavors. NOTES – interesting combination of flavors. Only second hazelnut flavored beer I’ve tried, and it’s pretty solid.

Loads of hazelnut and vanilla in the aroma. Brown color. Good balanced flavor of hazelnut, caramel, and vanilla. Very nutty in finish. Alcohol starts to catch up with you quickly. Good overall, but not my thing anymore...

Clear brown pour with a slight off white head. Really nice nose, coffee and hazelnut. Nice taste but some chemical astringency along with the coffee finish.

Transfer from BA review on 5-8-14- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours murky brown color with a one finger head of cream foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a caramel and coffee smell with some hints of a chocolate mixed within. Along with these aromas are some smells of hazelnut as well as a little bit of a more earthy hop aroma. A little bit of toffee and a touch of breadiness are there as well, with the overall aroma, being a somewhat weak, oddly mixed, and not quite balanced smell. Taste – A rather strong hazelnut coffee flavor is present right from the start, remaining constant throughout the taste and creating a base for the flavors of the brew. There is also a very sweet caramel and chocolate flavor at the start. As the taste advances the sweetness persists, only with it transitioning, as a bit of the caramel moves toward a more a toffee and molasses like flavor and with the chocolate gaining some flavors of vanilla enhancing the sweetness. Toward the very end some light earthy and floral hop flavors, as well as a light level of booziness comes to the tongue leaving a sweet, lightly boozy, hazelnut coffee flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is on the average side. Both are quite nice for the style as they really meld well the hazelnut coffee and sweeter flavors of the brew nicer and make for a decently easy drinker. Overall – A nice imperial porter that isn’t trying to mimic a stout and take tons of roast, but instead melds well chocolate flavors with a nice hazelnut coffee flavor to create a very pleasant smooth sipper with a good level of coffee, chocolate, and sweet.
