COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

Dark brown pour, light brown head. Aroma is all coffee and hazelnuts. Man this smells good. Sweet and rich. Flavor follows suit. If you don’t like coffee and/or hazelnuts then don’t expect to like this. But I love both and thought that his was really delicious.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2012 Bottle. Dark brown with a medium cream-colored head. Aroma is sweet and dominated by coffee and hazelnuts, with some caramel. It’s like walking into a coffee shop, I can smell this for hours. Taste is more of the same, with a little chocolate as well. Finish is sweet with some roasted bitterness. Full bodied, very creamy. Great great stuff.

Bottle. Split with Vinny and and big Boss Tom. Pours dark amber-brown with a creamy, khaki head. Aroma of chocolate chip cookie dough, vibrant, bold hazelnut, freshly ground coffee beans, and French vanilla. The mouthfeel is so soft, supple, sweet and subtly bitter. Taste is hazelnut coffee, beautiful, bittersweet dark chocolate, and smooth, creamy French vanilla. Finishes like velvet. This is an excellent ale in every regard. Well-balanced, flavorful, and spot-on for the concept. Founders is just so, so solid and creative. Fantastic.

750ml bottle ----> glass - Damn I love every aspect of this beer! The coffee acidity, the smoothness, the texture, the aroma! Excellent stuff. This is not a beer for non-java drinkers.

750 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch light tan head that stayed around for a little while. There’s a good amount of lacing, too. I love the aroma of this brew, it smells like hazelnuts, coffee, roasted malt, caramel, and some brown sugar. I think the coffee flavor is dominant at first, with the hazelnut, caramel, and vanilla flavors becoming stronger as the brew warms up more. Very tasty brew! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s coating and has moderate carbonation. I think this is a pretty good overall brew, if I had another bottle I’d drink it right now! Definitely recommended.

Poured from bomber to dimple mug: Pours a clean coffee brown, topped with dense creamy mocha head. Great lacing, minimal beading. Doesn’t look as big as I thought it would. The smells explodes from the bottle, and exactly as advertised - big fat hazelnut, fresh gas station coffee, various dark malts, vanilla, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, the bitterness of coffee and hops keep a perfect balance. This is precisely what a coffee beer ought to be. Every quality of a great brown ale, smothered in hazelnut coffee and just a touch of boozy heat at the finish. Fuck Irish coffee, I’d way rather have one of these. This beer is damn near perfect.

Shared by Daknole. Nice brown pour with a tan head. Aroma is dead on with hazelnut coffee ever present. Taste is there too and it is medium bodied and lovely. Damn is this good!

Courtesy of Daknole. Big, rich aromas of hazelnut, wood, vanilla. Flavors follow similarly- lots of creamy nuttiness, vanilla, sweet malts. Creamy texture. Hard to believe this isn’t barrel-aged. Alcohol not even detectable. So good- wish I could’ve had more, but grateful for the taster! Does Founders make anything bad??

Pours dark brown with very strong hazelnut coffee aroma, slightly sweet with strong hazelnut flavor, overall a fantastic brown ale

Bottle. Poured a chestnut brown color with a big pillowy tan head that retained throughout the beer. Aroma was very nutty, hazelnut was very dominant, coffee notes. Flavor was dominated by coffee and nuts. The more you drink the more this beer grows on you. Amazing beer from an amazing company.
