On draft at Founders. The pour is a beautiful black with a light tan head that fades to a film, leaving beautifully clingy lace all around. The aroma is rather lacking. There is a light maltiness to it, but overall it's thin and really leaves a lot to be desired. The taste is a bit better. There is a slight complexity with the roast and some light notes of cocoa. It just leaves one wanting. There is a decent mouth feel, a bit thin, and the dry finish is nice. Not too bad, but I was looking for a little more out of it ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is nothing special, roasted malt and a little light. Appearance is dark, with a brownish head. Taste is robust roasted malt, coffee, burnt, pretty good. Finish is dry and real bitter. Mouthfeel is fantastic, soft carbonation, oily, hangs around. Overall, I was worried by the aroma but it came through nice in the end.

Part of a sampler at Founders. Appearance: Black with a brown head. Pretty good lacing. Would look nice in a pint. Smell: Ash and roastiness. The ash sort of aroma threw me off a bit just because I wasnít expecting it, but itís nice. Am I drinking the same beer as others here? Doesnít seem that way. Taste/feel: Nice body. Not too heavy. Roastiness with the coffee. Some dark chocolate. The ash is a bit strong on the aftertaste, and was a turn off for others I was with. Reasonable amount of bitterness. A pretty big stout overall. Well crafted.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a rich blackish color with a beige head. Aroma is roasty with cocoa, dark chocolate, and dark bread notes. Some vanilla and cake notes as well. Flavor is rich, dry, lots of dark chocolate and some bitter roastiness. Full bodied, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Finishes mildly roasty and bitter.

Draft sample - nitro. Poured black color with an average creamy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Good roasted coffee and chocolate malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth dry texture with flat carbonation. Moderate toasted dark chocolate flavor with a medium dark chocolate finish of average duration. Solid drinkable stout.

On tap at Founders, my 100th Founders rating. Opaque dark brown body, medium tight creamy tan head. Nose of coffee beans and dark roast, bitter. Woody, roasty body with light acidity; bitter and tannic but not astringent. Full-flavored. Solid.

Pint on tap at the brewpub (Grand Rapids, MI). Pours a nice murky opaque blackish pour, a thick brownish lighter head sits atop, laces well, sticks around well. Aromas are roasted barley and cocoa, some coffee, toffee, and toast. Some mellow vanilla, rich creamy nitro. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied with roast, toast, some vanilla, cocoa, and toffee. Some rich vanilla, some roasty bread, biscuits, a light nitro appeal on the pallate. Lots of cocoa and molasses. Vanilla, creamy and roasty elements clash. Finish throws some good lingering roast, earthy nuts, toffee, and more roast. Some cocoa, toffee. Really rich yet still lighter on body up front. Iíd almost say itís a little heavy. A nice Nitro Stout with a lot of flavor, creamy body yet still a little girth to it

Black Coffee on the nose, black with small foamy head. Dark Chocolate nice sweet maltyness, toffee, very creamy, just enough kick. Great stuff, much more drinkable that typical founders Stouts.

Draft at the brewpub. Black so that no red or light gets through. A nice dark tan head does have a bit of red. Nothing but big chocolate in the aroma. The flavor is exactly the same with lors of sweet chocolate. There arevsome hops that tend to provide attitude and bitterness. This is thick and rich and feeds the sweet tooth but that is not at all cloying. Good.
