3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep red/black color with small tan head that fades quickly. Strong roasted barley with chocolate and coffee taste. Mild but pleasant aftertaste. Not quite as strong as Expedition Stout or Old Rasputin but a good Imperial Stout. A great offering from Founders Ales.

Pours thick black with a mocha head that quickly dissipates. Aromas of dark chocolate and coffee with lots of roasted barley. Very clean flavor that lingers for 60+secs. Some cherries and burnt toast. slight bitterness on the finish very creamy mouthfeel. Excellent beer!

Blackness incarnate, thick and solid, no light shall enter here, and this ebon domain is covered by a rich, full, thick, roasty tan head....a visual delight,so far, for†those†who†donít fear the dark!
Aroma is just perfect for the IS style, rich, dark, full of dark fruits, plus anise, maple, carob, charcoal, roast, ...very good!
Taste: oooh, this is nice, thick and rich and full and dominating the palate. full bodied, massive texture, huge mouthfeel...a very potent and powerful stout!
Rich and thick and delicious, even, just coating the mouth with a wonderfulness that every stout lover can get behind. Doesnít kick my ass like Expedition, but thatís not the duty of every IS, is it? No, this is fine, this is good, this is another great example of the style, from what seems to be a really capable brewery!

Dark and about as thick as I have seen a beer with a dark brown, thick head. Blueberry, and fresh brewed coffee notes followed by some sweet malt on the nose. Creamy adn thick in the mouth, with a drying finish. Sour flavors, with chocolate(milk), burnt toast, light carbonation, Lighter in the palate than the pour led me to believe, mouthfilling though and the sour/sweet tug of war on the finish is making me wonder if I like it. Definatly a lot there. From the ratings itís hard to tell if there were bad bottles or wide swings in preference. I think Iíd prefer a Expedition Stout to this, though I do like parts of this beer. Guess Iíll have to try it again!

Thanks to TannerTavernboys for the brew even though the bottle probably was infected, for this was not what i had expected. This beer started off great by pouring like a dry stout. Black as night appearance with a slight purplish colored head. The aroma was chocolatey, with definite alcohol, cocoa, sweet vanilla, dark currants, asphalt and plums. The taste is where everything went downhill as it was incredibly acetic and milk stout-like. This was sour...what the hell? Some chocolate and mild carbonation with grapefruit in the finish...i mean what the hell? Heavy chocolate, malty and dry. Most likely an infected bottle....i HOPE so! Must find more....

Thick black pour, brown creamy head. Dark black body with no light to be seen coming through. Lacing on the glass just sticks to the side like its glue. Burnt/roasted sweet syrup aroma with fruit, brown sugar, charcoal and chocolate. Thick mouthfeel. Taste is burnt and slightly smokey sweet coffee bean and blueberries. Good stuff.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
7/31/04. Poured out of 12 oz. bottle, obtained in a trade on RateBeer. Pours an opaque dark black with dark brown outlines. Huge, fluffy and sandy brown-orange head. Lovely. Awesome retention, decent lacing. Nose is like rich chocolate cake with hints of dark roast coffee, dark berries, and vanilla. Really wonderfully complex and nicely powerful without being overwhelming. First taste gives a light kick of alcohol, nice roast, bittersweet chocolate, and a really good back-end of burnt coffee beans. Very rich and tasty. Finish hints at burnt coffee acidity, but doesnít ever really go there. Just a very, very dark roastiness. Pretty long and sufficiently complex, but probably the weakest part of the beer. Still pretty damn awesome. I canít believe this isnít rated higher. Just a great all-around imperial stout.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2005 12 oz bottle-hmm, i think i got another infected/old bottle of this stuff. pours pitch black with slight tan head. roasted, chocolate, sweet dark chocolate-slight alcohol aromas. Some sour licorice flavors in the finish also. The sourness shows that this is either a badly stored beer or its infected. very acidic and unbalanced. I must seek a fresh sample of this one.
ReRate-ok, here we go-we got a good one here. pours a very deep black hue with a nice tan head. Hershey chocolate bar aroma with a touch of roast. Flavors of chocolate milk, roast, char and mocha. Awesome palate that is much improved from the crappy bottle i had before. However, i can see where this beer can go bad with sourness. Some hops were present in the mid palate. Slightly strong carbonation for the style. Very tasty. origonal rating 3.1
