COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A fine companion to end a meal or relax in front of the hearth with, this robust ale will cellar well for years. Brewed with ten varieties of malted barley this stout is extremely smooth, complex and rich in body. We recommend serving at cellar temperature. Sit back and enjoy its richness and complexity, you’re about to drink the ultimate winter warmer.

Had this on draft.Chocolate dominates the palate.Big at 10 percent but not present. Smooth creamy with a tanish head expected from a stout that maintains a slight topping throughout the pint.Thick but not overwhelmingly so . I recommend ordering a pint if you get the chance! Recommend

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2009 On Tap at the brewery. Big, gorgeous pour with a big dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, dark malt, coffee, vanilla, licorice. Flavor is full of chocolate, rich and warming. Absolutely delicious. Big, creamy mouthfeel. Bitter finish, and a great beer. Sampled out of bottle on 1/6/09. Bitter chocolate notes much more apparent and a much more bitter hop presence in the flavor, with hints of anise and licorice in the finish. The warmer temperature helps bring this one out. Not sure why they serve it so cold at the brew pub

Fresh 12oz stubby. Pours pretty darn dark black with a foamy dense dark brown ocean of a head. Heavily aromatics evident from pouring the bottle feet away. A closer inspection shows notes of candied chocolate, sugar, oats, baker’s chocolate, cocoa powder. Smells relatively young, similar in profile to a fresh Expedition. The chocolate is nice in the aroma, nice and rounded. Some vanilla might sneak in there too. Dessert like, cake-like. Flavor is nice, rich, and uber smooth chocolate. Does not taste harsh or green or overly fresh as the nose kind of did. Palate is super smooth and coating, thick and rich and chewy and slick. This is surprisingly kind of great. Certainly the best of the stouts I’ve had from this company, though admittedly I’ve been a little let down by the others. Perhaps their best beer?

Bottle courtesy Eithcubes. Pours oily black with no head. Huge roasted grain, chocolate malt, vanilla and dark fruit aroma. Taste is thick and oily with lots of dark fruit, roasted grains and very complex. Finishes with a nice roasty grain and dark fruit finish. Every bit as good as Dark Lord.

Courtesy of cigarcitybrew. Pours pitch black, brownish head. Aroma, lots of coffee. Taste, roasted, torrified coffee, grainy (oat), lot of coffee in the aftertaste. Filled with some chocolat malts. Mouthfeel is thick and coffeeish, alcohol slowly engulfs the mouth with a warming feel. This is one awesome beer. A little above the Kentucky Bfast and under Kentucky Bourbon.

On draft and in bottles. Pours a black body with a tan head. Very malty, warm etoh, lightly bitter with coffee, some chocolately malt and caramel. Lightly toasted a great stout.

Bottle courtesy of tjthresh. Thanks again for the bottle, Tom. Pours jet black with a thin, creamy, dark cocoa head that diminishes to a thin galaxy of swirling bubbles. The nose is of dark roasted malt, light coffee, faint toffee, ash and sweet fruitiness. Medium-bodied and slick with a dry, bitter-roasted finish that features a touch of alcohol at the finish. Sweet, ashy, dark roasted malt with supporting fruity and alcohol notes. This one didn’t blow me away. As a big fan of Founders brews, I found it a bit of a letdown. Perhaps I had an "off" bottle. It is a solid brew but not a great impy stout. I will definitely keep my eyes open for another bottle of this one; I think a re-rate may be in order.

12oz bottle from Badbeer. Pours thick looking jet black with a very thin, tan head. Smells of dark chocolate and roasty dark malts. Tastes dark chocolatey with a roasty malty sweetness. Very nice, solid brew. Semi-dry, full bodied, good carbonation.

6-22-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to IowaHerkeye and drewbeerme
Thick black pour with a tan brown head and tiny spotted lacing. Smell is alcohol and figs and raisins up front. Flavor is nice and fruity malt and roasted nuts. So incredibly SMOOTH! One of the smoothest beers I’ve had in a while. Well balanced, no bold present alcohol. Overall, so wonderfully drinkable and feels great on the tongue.

2004 Bottle Pitch black with a slow rising dark brown head, excellent lacing and retention. Rich smell of malt, no hop presence in the nose, which I’m very pleased by. Smells of cocoa and molasses, sweet caramel beneath, dark fruits as well. Bitterness from the roasted malts greet your tongue first, followed by an almost dry cocoa flavor. Slightly roasty finish, more bitterness as well, not as good as the smell. Lighter side of medium carbonation with medium body. This was pretty good, but perhaps more age would benefit it yet. Too bad this was my only bottle.
