Poured out of a bottle, Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, and roasty bitterness, Very small brown head that quickly dissapates, Opaque black in color, Taste is the same as the aroma with very little hop bitterness but lingering malt bitterness, Mouthfeel is full and silky, a very good example of an RIS. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black ooze - you can tell it’s thick by how it globs together as its cascades into the glass. The head takes a full 5 seconds to appear, and when it does, it’s medium-medium-dark brown, slightly warm, medium-fine frothy head that is medium-slow to fade. One of the darkest heads I’ve ever seen (perhaps THE darkest... this is consistent with what I know about Founders grainbills, such as with their delicious porter - they use an exceptional amount of dark malt.) Aroma is a cake of toasted oat, wheat, barley, light brown sugar, leafy herbs, semi-sweet cocoa, scone. No BBQ and very little soy sauce, if any! Body is heavy - you can feel the dead weight of it hit your lips, although it is still not overly oppressive on the palate. It’s very very oily, only slightly syrupy, and not gritty at all. Carbonation is very fine, with a smooth burn, moderate intensity, nice arc. Flavor is strong burnt toast, light espresso bean, some burn multi-grain scone, bitter grapefruit rind and herbs. Some chewy green sage back there too. Perhaps a bit too burnt tasting for me, and the aroma definitely lacks in intensity compared with the flavor and my expectations. Nonetheless, the body and appearance of this beast, not to mention the copious burnt flavor components, make this a beer that stands out.

Strong scent of black licorice, leather, roast/coffee, dark chocolate, anise, sharp hops and some booze. I could smell this from a couple feet away as it was pouring. Great looking beer - flat black color with a tiny tan ring of foam that lingers forever. Taste is hops, roast, black licorice, anise and more hops. Aftertaste brings out the dark chocolate and a slight booze burn. Kinda harsh, maybe the hoppiest imperial stout I have had. Palate is nearly perfect, could be thicker. Overall good, I will be aging a few bottles. With a couple of years on it, this will be great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Pours deepest darkest northern night black, traces of a khaki head. Aroma of a liqorice and coffee. Taste is rich roast malt, sweet, some bitter to clear. It’s perfect for a winter evening.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque black-brown with a large medium-brown head and very good lacing. Aroma of chocolate, woodsy roasted malt, molasses, dark toast and berries. Taste of chocolate, charred wood, roasted malt, berries and molasses. Very full body and medium/low carbonization with a slightly viscous mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Its founders and its an IS so you know what you are getting. A heavy but beautifully crafted IS that hits on all notes of chocolate, roast and alcohol.

35,5cl bottle at Pahad Poisid, Tartu. Pours pitch black like used motor oil, not much head but some beige bubbles are present. Roasty aroma with dark, bitter chocolate, dark fruits, hops, hints of citrus and wood. Sweet, complex and deliciously flavourful. Well balanced and the 90 IBUs are surprisingly well hidden. Full body, somewhat oily and with carbonation on the sodt side. Simply delicious!

Jet black color with almost no head. Pleasant smell of chocolate, roasted malts and a subtle sweetness. Incredibly smooth and balanced. Bitter finish. Can’t even detect the alcohol. Another great Founders beer.

Holy! This is black as pitch with a billowy dark chocolate milk head. Nose of rich cocoa, balsamic vinegar, and salted caramel. Flavor is ridiculous with chocolate mousse, sweet vanilla, leather, smoke, licorice, bitter coffee, and something antiseptic all fighting for prominence. The mouth feel is oily, but not as viscous as some other imperial stouts. Still, an amazingly flavorful stout that is worth savoring.
