Jonathan3584 (323), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jun 27, 2005 Thanks to OhioDad. Drank head to head against Thirsty Dog Siberian Night (also thanks to OhioDad) yesterday. Pours thick black and syrupy. Small dark brown head on it. Aroma is of heavy roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, fruity esters, and hops; plenty of hops. Good thick mouthfeel. There’s plenty of roast and coffee in the flavor, but it’s dominated by a nice sweet chocolate and dried/burned fruits. Very impressive beer -- I know it’s blasphemy, but I thought this one was better than the Breakfast Stout. Good job, Founders.
dchmela (833), Orlando, Florida, USA Dec 1, 2008 Bottle courtesy Eithcubes. Pours oily black with no head. Huge roasted grain, chocolate malt, vanilla and dark fruit aroma. Taste is thick and oily with lots of dark fruit, roasted grains and very complex. Finishes with a nice roasty grain and dark fruit finish. Every bit as good as Dark Lord. sebletitje (579), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 22, 2008 Courtesy of cigarcitybrew.
Pours pitch black, brownish head.
Aroma, lots of coffee.
Taste, roasted, torrified coffee, grainy (oat), lot of coffee in the aftertaste. Filled with some chocolat malts.
Mouthfeel is thick and coffeeish, alcohol slowly engulfs the mouth with a warming feel.
This is one awesome beer.
A little above the Kentucky Bfast and under Kentucky Bourbon. Rciesla (1136), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 12, 2008 On draft and in bottles. Pours a black body with a tan head. Very malty, warm etoh, lightly bitter with coffee, some chocolately malt and caramel. Lightly toasted a great stout. Gregis (937), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Oct 6, 2008 Bottle courtesy of tjthresh. Thanks again for the bottle, Tom. Pours jet black with a thin, creamy, dark cocoa head that diminishes to a thin galaxy of swirling bubbles. The nose is of dark roasted malt, light coffee, faint toffee, ash and sweet fruitiness. Medium-bodied and slick with a dry, bitter-roasted finish that features a touch of alcohol at the finish. Sweet, ashy, dark roasted malt with supporting fruity and alcohol notes. This one didn’t blow me away. As a big fan of Founders brews, I found it a bit of a letdown. Perhaps I had an "off" bottle. It is a solid brew but not a great impy stout. I will definitely keep my eyes open for another bottle of this one; I think a re-rate may be in order. doubleo (966), San Diego, California, USA Aug 10, 2008 12oz bottle from Badbeer. Pours thick looking jet black with a very thin, tan head. Smells of dark chocolate and roasty dark malts. Tastes dark chocolatey with a roasty malty sweetness. Very nice, solid brew. Semi-dry, full bodied, good carbonation.
